Oh well, but let's not forget: Intel CPUs suck!

True! Why is Intel so popular? I have an Athlon processor on my laptop and it burries any Intel chip I've ever seen.

Intel's Conroe chip looks really good though... Over at Anadtech, they benchmarked it to an overclocked AMD, and the Intel chip beat it pretty well...

Yeah, channel 2nd input bugs are gone!
What is the preset save problem in VST?!? Can't remember any problem there...
Oh, my MacBook arrived! Finally! I'll put the update out when I've got the Universal Binaries going!
Cheers,
Urs

Hey Urs, are you going to port Filterscape to UB as well? I know that you have a lot on your plate. Just wondering if it is a future concept to get Filterscape on IntelMac?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

Pretty dubious behaviour by Intel though. They are comparing a forthcoming Intel chip (months off) with a slightly overclocked current AMD chip. When Conroe rubber hits the road it will be competing against new gen AMD chips. The other thing more relevant to us is - how well will Conroe/Merom run audio plugins compared to dual core Athlon 64/Turion? That test shows a major improvement over current Intel desktops chips but it is too soon to say which will be the best or the best bang for buck in Q3.kenn michael wrote:Intel's Conroe chip looks really good though... I have somewhat like 14 plugs that will go Universal Binary within the next 2-4 months. Filterscape is No.2 on the list (after Z2 final, naturally)
Btw. while the overall feel of the MacBook is absolutely great, the audio performance is a bit weak compared to G5, at least for my stuff. Thus I've already started to port some critical areas (filters, oscillators) to SSE2. It's fun and I can definately say it's going to be on par with G5 Macs - which also means that the PC version of Z2 is eventually going to more cpu friendly. (However, Filterscape will need SSE3/EMT64 for any further optimization. Dunno if that makes any sense right now)

ooohhhh!!! exciting stuff Urs! I love my MacBook and am very excited about the future of the OSX Intel platform. you should start a blog about your experiences developing for the platform. i for one am very interested.

Hi Kenn,
well, you better not want me to do such a blog
I mean, I really *love* the MacBook. The work itself is great. The setup is wonderful. Got a brand new keyboard attached to it (my old keyboard from the G5 is more brown than white and some keys got sticky because I hacked it too severely).
I made a nice construction: Motu 828 on table, Logic box between Motu and MacBook, lifting it 8 inches above the table so that it lines up with the 23 inch Cinema Display.
However, some quircks:
- Photoshop is still on the G5 and no UB in sight. So for serious graphics work I have to change the setup.
- A critical optimization setting that always worked for me (gcc on G5, Microsoft compiler on PC) does not work anymore when compiling UBs (probably a bug in Apple's latest gcc), giving me an about 10% performance penalty. (That's probably why I have to do SSE2 stuff, setting me a week back in the schedule)
- drivers
- sometimes the Midi driver (Unitor8) kills itself and I have to reboot. Sometimes the Motu goes silent and I have to change samplerate back and forth to bring it back.
- the most important plugin, s(M)exoscope, is not available as UB
However, the *feel* is so great, I'm stunned. I do understand why Apple pushes the new platform. I suspect that it's related to better text crunching capabilities of x86 vs. ppc. As MacOS X heavily relies on parsing XML, this may explain why everything feels so much snappier.
Cheers,
Urs

ahhhh.... parsing XML and text crunching on x86 vs. ppc.... good stuff Urs... keep it coming!
and beej - maybe not snappIER than my G5 (well yes, web browsing is faster on the MacBook), but definitely AS snappy....
no, i take that back. the MacBook DOES feel snappIER than my G5.
