I just want to make a few comments about OSXA and moderation/administration. Each of the admins and mods has a different stance about when to step in, and what to do when a problem occurs. Some mods are more quick than others to lock or delete threads. It is a hard balancing act when you want to support the decision of a fellow mod or admin, but you also think it should have been handled a different way. We don't want to undermine each other, but we do argue privately about some of these actions. In my own actions, I prefer to respond to problems with public posts, but I don't like locking or deleting threads. The only threads I recall locking or deleting were some that we dealt with up until the end of 2004, involving certain users repeatedly bumping and hijacking threads to sell their dubiously-legal sample collection and discontinued software that they didn't own the rights to. This was abuse of the site by multiple users with multiple usernames whose only purpose was selling. I tried repeatedly to deal with these people over email and publicly, but they would not respect our wishes, so we had to ban them and delete their self-promotion threads.

As far as arguing and politics and other emotional topics, I don't have any problem until the personal insults start. In those cases, I again like to respond publicly and call for toning it down. Sometimes members continue to be abusive to others, and when it goes from bad to worse, those threads can get locked. Sometimes threads get locked too soon, but when that happens, I have to support the decisions of my colleagues even if I don't totally agree. This is loyalty and trust.

I don't even know why I am posting this. I just don't want to be known as a draconian admin. I would rather be known for using my power to correct spelling in thread titles, remove ALL caps, move posts to the forums where they belong, and most importantly, leading the development of the current forum structure when we did our big reorganization a while back.

Mentioning others by name, I will say that I am glad that tdc has gotten a lot more active in the last several months after a long absence where we rarely heard from our founder. I have NO IDEA what the new site looks like or how it functions. It'll be as new to me as to everyone. I would have liked to have had a peek in advance, but oh well. I'm glad that heritage took a break; I think he was taking things too personally on the site and getting over affected by things that happened. I'm sorry we went through all that drama with fuc and oink. I think we were overprotective of marcus, and I sympathize with many things that fuc says. I do think he could still be the iconoclastic outspoken person he likes to be without trying intentionally to provoke certain people (not me). I don't know where oink went, maybe the Apple forums. I don't know if we'll see him at the new site or not. I feel sad that bdiament felt attacked and left, deleting all of his posts. I think that just came from a big misunderstanding and being too sensitive. That's all I can think of right now.

In conclusion, I think judging OSXA/BBL by the fact that a few threads got locked or deleted is a very narrow analysis. The community is very dynamic and things are always changing. The mods change, the forums change, the complaints change, the membership changes, but the community remains. As long as there are those of you who give and take value from the community, I think we'll be ok and can weather any storms.

Cheers,

Jason Hyerstay

I think something like what you wrote in your first paragraphs would make a nice policy statement/moderation standard. This might eliminate the sense that decisions are sometimes made arbitrarily.

For the record, thank you and all the mods for doing a thankless job. We often overlook all the important work you do.

Of course, personally, I think threads should be locked and posts deleted at random just to keep everyone on their toes. I really like it when some of the posts ended up in the wrong order or even the wrong thread. I wish there was a thread shuffling button. :hihi:

Can't wait for Sunday!
