For an audiotrack for a wargame i'm in need of a reverb that does realistic outdoor enviroments, or a combination of effects to archieve that sound. I'm ok in the filtering and dynamic shaping department, but the actual 'cracking echoes' that i would like to add to distant gunfire i can't seem to get right.

What would be the best reverb for me?

Have you tried convolution reverbs?

There is a good free one called SIR, or the commercial (but superior) Voxengo pristine space.

Then download these absolutely brilliant free impulse sets,

VSS3 set here

Lexicon L960 here:
http://www.noisevault.com/index.php?opt ... t=category

Those sets will very likely have what you're looking for. Especially the VSS3 set. They are free, but impulses don't really get better than that. :D

You probably want a delay-reverb type of sound for those echoes.

There are other lexicon ones that would work whith your ones at Noisevault Kingston.

Theres lexicon - MPX500, 91, 90, 81, 70, 60. There is a 480L floating about if your quick enough(long post here somewhere)

Rangtangtang,

I've done quite extensive testing with the noisevault stuff and have concluded that apart from that 960 set (and very few others), it's all shit.

Hence the recommendation. Just trying to save him some time.

I agree Kingston, there not all that good but your lucky to get those ones. Unless you make your own?

Sounds like a job for the Lexicon "wild spaces" department. Or an impulse of a real forest or street...

You could also try RaySpace

Thank you for your replies, very useful information. I'm new to Impulse effects to be honest.. but it's time i get into that so thanks for 'filtering' out the good vs bad there Kingston. That Lexicon 960 sure looks like it could be the one. Hopefully tonight i can testdrive SIR with some impulses. Raytrace i will also try, cheers Peter.

I wouldn't have found these sources without all your help so thanks again! ;)

Do not forget to experiment with delays (+reverb)!

Barbarossa is right. You need lots or early reflections coming from mountains, as I see, you're searching for that "thunder" (cascading) reverb effect, right?

I don't know if there is an IR that does this.

There is,

I already mentioned where. They can be found in my first post.

Keep in mind that the sonic crack can be a major part (depending on the listener position even more than 90%) of a distant gunfire sound (if the firearm uses supersonic ammo).

So if You have only muzzle blast samples, no reverb will make your distant gunfire sound realistic enough (for me).

Kingston, right now i'm trying the impulse sets. So far i tried them in soundforge but i'm not too happy with the sound so i'm going to try another host/reverb later today. The impulses are impressive though, There's even a ricochet effect in there as you said.

Mutant, it's the sonic crack that's giving me the most trouble for now. The reverbs understandably do not emulate that. For now i'm using some filter envelopes to make a similar effect, they sort of work, but it's not the realistic crack i want. If you have an idea, shoot!

Your game engine doesn't have reverb built in? :(

Some very interesting data on muzzle blast & sonic cracks.

Almost 140dB at 10M from the bullet:
