I gotta admit using a pedal makes it easier wit a pick in your hand...btw even with your trick you have far more signal loss than with active, simply because active is low z
...but it's purely up to ones taste, that's for sure...I think the little pa2s are great because they are under 30 bux usd, they work with passive pick-ups...and they can be shut off going back to passive...even better you can set the boost up to 20 db via a trimpot so it's flexible...

I have a Chandler booster which is now gathering dust somewhere. Never used it.

btw in Azimuth I did not use the PA2 pre-amp boost at all, just the EMG 81...it's not something I use all the time, and I have the trim pots all turned down quite low (three guitars have them...two with emgs one with three duncans)...they're almost more of an expander the way I have them set than a boost...
