I think ben might be going informally but he hasn't announced a stand or anything this year.

Actually, I've decided not to go this year. I spoke to everyone I needed to and checked out the stuff I wanted to at NAMM. I don't have anything new to announce. I'm planning to have a stand next year at NAMM and Messe.

Basically, I figured I should save the extra CO2 emmissions from a flight, save a bit of cash, and spend more time programming. The only trouble is that a Camel product has been nominated for a Keys mag award. I'll feel bad if I win and don't go! Just incase - if anyone else is invited to that awards ceremony on Wednesday and wouldn't mind picking up an award for me, could you drop me a PM.

It's a shame not to go for beers with everyone as usual though. I send my

don't forget the Chinese company booth that was in front of the U-he&Friends booth last year...

One might argue that the plane is going anyway and therefore that it would be in best interests to distribute the CO2 output amongst as many people as possible, and increase as many people's utility as possible for that set CO2 output

(mwahahaha I can still remember my environmental economics)

Sorry for straying way OT but ... I don't buy that argument. Its like democracy - each person has a small vote, but if many people behave in the same way, then its possible to change things. The point is that by catching that flight, the company running the flight will make more money on that flight, therefore they will make a greater profit, be more likely to run the flight in future, etc.

I'm still experiencing a terrible flue that has kept me in bed since last sunday and all I want is to be back in bed. I'll miss it enormously, but heck, there'll be a next year

You were missed... It's been great meeting the new and old faces of the audio software world, although I would have loved to have chatted longer with Rene.

Product-wise, the highlights of the show for me were probably Yellow Tools Freedom, which has an impressive looking positional room-emulation component called Origami LE... Different zones in the room are calculated separately and interpolated between depending on the position. This is due to be upgraded to a fuller-featured component called Origami, which will support up to 56 IRs in one room. I imagine the VSL guys will be pretty interested in this one as they are developing MIR, a multi-IR based positional convolution engine, although the Yellow Tools guys assured me that Origami will be very different, not least because of the larger number of IRs. Freedom also boasted some very fat sounding filters and surround processing.

I also enjoyed playing the new VSL Solo Strings VSTi first hand - I was drooling over it before but now it's on the "absolutely positively must have" list. Chris Hein demoed his new Guitar Library which, besides being the most comprehensive, authentic multisampled guitar library I've ever seen, had some extremely clever performance features, like continous slide samples, and strumming with a velocity-controlled number of strings. There seems to be an increasing move towards performance-oriented instruments such as this, and to this end, the Lemur controller I played with at Messe seems like an excellent tool. Terratec Komplexer was sounding great as was Fabfilter Twin, and the new Matrox remote display technology was looking impressive, if not a little out of mere mortals price range (although Ben KVR definitely has it on his shopping list now).

I also met the Muse Research guys who showed me Ivory running on the Receptor, which featured a sumptously full-bodied Steinway emulation. We had a long and seemingly productive chat about where things were headed, so I may have inadvertently given the Muse programmers some extra work...

Although I had already tried both of them, I discovered new sides of Lounge Lizard 3 and GURU, which really enters another dimension when used with a dedicated MIDI CC box - plenty of glitchy, freaky sounds to be had. Ableton enlisted the services of an excellent beatboxer (whose name currently escapes me), who used Live to create an entire live electronica band - this was definitely one of this big hits of the show and the cause of many traffic jams around the stand, as if stealing the show at Club Monza the previous night hadn't been enough. Was great to hang out with Putte, Dave, Gareth and Angus FX again and meet Gregory (aka Red Force) and URS, enough to compensate for the fact that Ben and I missed Maceo Parker playing at the Prolight and Sound exhibition next door to Musikmesse (

Thursday was great fun as we booked out almost the entirety of the Osteria restaurant, and I got to meet the rest of the Ohmies, and have some very entertaining conversation SKoT and Andrew from FXpansion, while Tommo showed us some of his fascinating live performance videos he did with his crazy bohemian compadres from Italy! On Friday evening I headed over to Dusseldorf with Rsmus7, and discovered the delights of Currywurst, Ouzo and Pils at a local Greek restaurant. We'll be taking in the delights of the city today, and I should be heading back to Frankfurt on Sunday and hopefully meeting up with the bunch for one last booze-up with fine pizza!
