Receptor settings for Ivory?

Hey all,

Just got a Receptor, primarily for running Ivory and Spectrasonics stuff live. I've got it installed and running, but I'm still getting some glitches and haven't been able to nail down a pattern to them. Specificially, I seem to have problems when Ivory's release samples are turned on, and when Receptor's sample buffers are set high (256 samples or more) or really low (32 samples). Here are my questions:

1. For those of you who are having "flawless" Ivory experiences, what are your Ivory settings (number of layers, number of voices, buffer sizes, release/soft pedal samples, etc). What is the maximum number of Ivory layers you can run?

2. My Receptor only has 1.25 GB RAM. Could that be the source of my problems?

I REALLY love the way Ivory works through the Receptor, especially the 10-layer Bosendorfer. Just want to clear up these glitches.

I don't think you are going to get it glitch-free at 32 samples without jacking up your RAM to 2 gb. I have 1.25 gb of RAM and am able to play without glitches at 64, so long as Ivory and MAsterverb are the only things instantiated. I turn release samples ON and soft pedal samples OFF, and keep the default buffer setting in Ivory at MEDIUM, with 24 voices I think.

There is my setup! Hope it helps.

Thanks for the input. I love how it responds at 32 samples, but 64 is very workable. The thing I don't want to lose is having to move down from the 10-layer library (which I love) and having to turn the release samples off (which I also love).

Anyone else? I really appreciate this.

Hi Michael,

I am running Ivory with 2gig Ram in my Receptor - and Ivory takes everything I throw at it. I have not heard one pop - even using the Bosendorfer Imperial 10 with Release samples and 32 Receptor buffer (@ 24 voice).

Can't really help you with identifying what doesn't work, but I can tell you this configuration does seem to work.

Regards,
Kevin L.

OK....this is just too much for me to handle. I'm ordering Ivory on line right now. I wish
I hadn't spent so much money on
Kontakt piano libraries!!!!

Ditto here....BUT, has ANYONE with Ivory done tests with more than 24 voices, like 80-100? for big huge arpeggios with the sustain pedal down, don't you really need more than 24 voices?

Also, what number of velocity levels does Ivory implement?

thanks

Up to 10 layers in the Steinway and Bosendorfer libraries. It's weird, but for some reason 24 voices doesn't seem to bother me with Ivory, I just don't notice the voice stealing as much even with big intentional arpeggios with damper. At least not as much as I expected. I usually run it with 36-48 voices on my computer, and I've done 36 on the Receptor, and at that level, I've not really ever noticed any obvious stealing even when I know it's happening.

And is 24 voices equal to 12 or 24 STEREO voices?
I already ordered though....

24 voices is 24 stereo voices as I understand it.

Thanks again for the continued discussion, all. Very helpful.

Hi Everyone,

I'll probably try to answer some of this myself -- but since I did alot of the initial tests on Ivory, I'm hoping some of you can help me out. :^)

Does anyone know how gracefully / ungracefully Ivory is degrading when other plugs are on other receptor channels? Does Ivory degrade more with Sample/Disk hungry plugs (like Kompakt), compute intensive plugs (like miniMonsta), both? Does degradation mean pops/clicks (a la cpu peaking)?

Thanks,
Kevin L

Okay, I went out and upgraded my RAM from 1.25 GB to 2 GB. BIG DIFFERENCE! Ivory is now playable at 32 sample buffer settings with the full 10-layer libraries and release samples.

I did a little test. I set up the 10-layer Bosendorfer with medium buffer settings (in Ivory) with the release samples on, and the soft pedal samples off. I played sixteenth-note chromatic scales at around 150 BPM (beats as quarter notes) from one end of an 88-note keyboard to the other. At the end of the scale. I cycled the damper to hit the Receptor with the release samples. I then adjusted Ivory's voice allocation until there was no glitching.

At Receptor buffers of 32 samples, I could use 24-28 Ivory voice settings with no glitching. Very workable for pop stuff.

At Receptor buffers of 64 samples, I could use 88 voices in Ivory or better, with no glitching or CPU spikes. Impressive!

Of course, I like the "feel" of 32-sample buffers, it just feels more natural. 64 sample buffers are VERY workable though.

Anyone know if you can save Receptor buffer settings with patches or multis?

How much didja pay for your RAM, and where did ya get it?! :) I might have to make a pit stop after work...ha.

CompUSA (I'm embarrassed to admit). I know I could probably get better RAM or cheaper RAM online, but I'm an instant-gratification type. I got their Centon DDR400 PC3200 (backward compatible to PC2700) 1 GB stick. Around $130, and seems to work just fine.

Ahh, a man after my own heart. Speaking of instant gratifcation, I just bought Live 5.0 so I could IMMEDIATELY get some uniwire functionality (waiting for the kinds to be worked out of Pro Tools and the VST/RTAS wrapper) and I am pleased to report that it works quite nicely, at much decent latencies.

Now I have to go pick me up some RAM. Ha.
