Whatever the case, the guy needs a lesson in how to manage a changeover effectively, because it's been a horrible process everytime.
There really isn't much of a reason to not have a changeover be relatively invisible, worst case a day or two outage while the DNS resolves but even then there's ways to smooth that over as well...
I hope it's gonna be worthwhile when it finally gets back up and running...

multiplatform was never discussed at any point before the latest downage of the website, Mod's have stated they were not in the loop about this. I have to start to think the statement above might have some factoring in to this decision.soulkraka wrote:Somehow I get the feeling that "advertising dollars" are a factor in all this.

Why close down OSXA before BBL was ready to go on line?

given that it's seeming like it may be down for good, or at least a really really long time. what alternatives exist? other than KVR and Sonikmatter? any ex OSXAers floating around out there somewhere else? Or just getting more done and spending less time on the web? personally, i'm enjoying lurking and learning around here.
time to sleep

Well in addition to here and sonikmatter, there are these that have computer audio related forums, but I haven't really contributed or even lurked much in any of them so don't take this as a recommendation...

this guy started osxrecording.com (aka appleproaudio.com) the last time OSXA went down for a month or so and looked like it wasn't coming back. it's a really nice site and he seems like a good guy but there's not a lot of traffic in the forums, to say the least. it's really slow to load right now, but that might be temporary, I think there's too much going on on the pages.
he's been very open to suggestions as well.

Same here. I signed up over there as an alternative, but since then they've switched to new forum software which killed every account, and they keep adding more and more stuff to every page. The server can't seem to keep up, with a few seconds lag for every page load (doesn't sound like much, but it gets annoying). I'd also asked for some clarification on a product review, but the author just pointed me to the manufacturer's forum here on KvR which I'd already found to contain conflicting info, hence my question. It did have promise, though. Still bookmarked.
I had the same thought about advertising being the cause for BBL going cross platform. Nothing else makes sense. I don't begrudge TDC for making a business decision like that, as I think we would be capable of maintaining the pro-Mac tone anyway, and maybe that could lead to spending more time or hiring someone for the backend. I definitely wouldn't call him lazy, either (someone joked earlier). But he seems to need help, or help delegating. The news page is the most obvious example. I also sent in a friendly message long ago about the RSS feed containing illegal characters, and offered a 2 minute fix. Still broken. Just wanted to clear my thoughts on that. I'm looking forward to seeing the new BBL, even if I don't participate anymore.

Hey everybody, I'm registered simply as Michael over at OSXAudio.. that was of course already taken here...
Just to comment on all this, if BBL goes cross platform, it will lose 90% of it's appeal to me. I don't consider myself a mac elitist or anything, I simply like them better, end of story, BUT, when I come to places like KVR and the Ableton forum, it seems defending your choice becomes an easy forum wasting thing to do......
Like Fucanay I started posting at OSXAudio a looong time ago, and the attitude of the place has definitely changed, for the worse, there is no question in my mind about that. The amount of personal attacks, and other internet flotsam and jetsam hasn't decreased since the increased moderation and lack of tolerance, just the feeling that there is no room for any criticism that the mods deem unworthy, and no way of knowing what that entails.....
KVR and the Ableton forums are hardly moderated at all, yet I find that I can see active members from the development community in both, I find that if somebody gets too ridiculously abusive, other chime in to slap them down, I find it a more natural state of affairs. I'm an adult, and I expect every person I communicate with to act like one most of the time, and especially moderators.
I find that some of the mods at OSXA are far too thin skinned for the job, if that's the way TDC wants it then, I'l post occasionally when the need arises, but probably spend more time here and at Ableton....
Jason Hyerstay, you are definitely one of the most level headed mods, I would say you Big Daddy, and ...... damn? I'm bad with names? local Seattle guy.... anyway you three are right up there as far as just playing it straight, but the rest have their own agenda's too squarely in mind IMO.
Ned, you have to be a nice guy in person, you met up with Urs in person before I did, and Urs likes you, and Urs is about as stand up as they come, but you are way too thin skinned as a mod IMO. Hell? I've seen you try to admonish people here, to no avail...
No offense meant, like I said, Urs likes you, and Urs is definitely at the top of my list of internet people who are even more interesting to talk to in real life than via electronic toys....
Just to reiterate, OSXAudio becomes BBL, loses most of my interest, except for the fact that Jason does a great job of keeping things in order, and when I go back to using Digital Performer, Big Daddy's little section will definitely be on my hit list.
As it is, I write too much on the internet anyways...

hrpmh... I'm giving them another week, and if they're not back I'm building a "primary-colored, speaker-embedded lounge sofa thing" of my own..... and you'll all be invited to sit on it...
I think the very first forum to be created would of course be for hijacking (because no proper, self-respecting forum should be without one).....
and I would keep it to OSX-based topics, since that's about all I talk about anymore these days anyway... well, that and cat pee, but that's another story... :p

I was just passing through and came upon this thread and I just wanted to say hello to you guys! When I decided to leave the old OSXA I wrote a post explaining why I had made the choice to do so, and even though the post wasn't deleted an admin/mod locked it and made it un-viewable for the general population there. From that statement alone one should be able to discern some of the reasons why I felt it necessary to leave what appeared to me to be the little blue box. Anyway -- my intention is not to rehash the negative that already has been expressed in this thread, but I do want to balance my sentiments by saying that it's good to hear your old yet new voices again!
Peace.
Peace.

FWIW, I'll scoop the news that when the BBL re-opens, I'll no longer be a mod there. Hopefully this will allow for some new blood and thicker skin.
Read you there soon.
