I was interested, but maybe not 20 or 30 pages worth.... :D

Not sure if I missed it, but my understanding is that there's a 6 dB drop when you go from a balanced signal to an unbalanced one. That bit of info was tucked away in my VTB-1 manual somewhere, when I was going quietly insane trying to match levels into my compressor...

True, but that is when you connect the cold and the ground of the XLR in order to go from balanced to unbalanced; you just ground half the signal. It can be done, it is done, but it shouldn't be done IMHO, unless you have no other way of connecting stuff...

Darn.....Now I'm gonna have to go do some more reading, and probably reread this thread....

I'd really like to get my balnaced mic signal from the VTB-1 preamp into the unbalanced phono connections on my AudioPhile 2496 without that drop. I'd pretty much given up on it, just figured I didn't have any choice...It's obvious that I don't understand it properly yet...

Back to your regularly scheduled program ...

I'm pretty certain that once MW has finished his world-beating AmpSim, we can convince him to develope a balanced signal emulator in VST format.

Its prevalant because guitar players are idiots, me included, FOr years I just used my basic rig, I had 1 guitar and my 5150 with some pedals, NOw I got 7 guitars, too many freaking pedals, and have tried 4 different sets of tubes in my amp lately, just trying to see if there is a big difference in tubes, Which there is a difference, just not big, and I have 4 different mics to choose from that I use only for guitar recording. And the bottom line, IS I basically use 1 guitar, actually a second one becasue of a different tuning, I use the same pedals I did years ago, and I basically like the way the SHure Sm57 sounds on my amp, although I do use a Rode NTK condenser at times as well. SO I basically have gotten not a whole lot farther than a few years ago as far as tinkering goes. ITs just that in the guitar world, everything can be tweaked, even if it is completely useless in the end, it wass still fun to try it. I think amp sims fall under this distinction, I'm just glad a make some money nowadays so $75-$100 tinkering purchases here and there don't affect my bottom line.
