Didn't notice this thread initially, hope you're still around.
If you mean the sub used in the basslines (rather than the kicks in the beat), it's an 808 kick used as a pitched sample. Stick a lowpass filter on top to kill some of the thump and makes it a bit more subby, then add a little distortion and stuff like you would any other bass.

Having a good well tuned sub speaker you know and that your ears trust is #1
#2 is to listen to your favorite sounding records with those basslines you love that rip it up.
#3 just try and emulate that, a simple sine wave (as suggested earlier) helps. Though its not as simple, listen to different synths and how they react. Go with the one that feels best.
The Autria (sp?), and Gforce styled plugins do the best work IMO for softsynths, esp on low end. The Prophet keyboards make some wicked low end too. There are a TON of free samples you can download that are suprisingly very useful for that kind of stuff.
#4 and finaly, compression. Control of the sound is just as important as any of the other steps. 3-5db of attn is pretty recomended, any more than that will squish your sound. Remember the more you compress the smaller and less dynamic impact the sound has. Stay the hell away from hard limiters, they can turn a smooth bass sound into caca in the club in seconds flat
don't be lazy with your sounds, and it takes mucho effort to get somethings to sound right. Sometimes hours, or days, but in the end its worth it.
Good luck with your gnarlz bazzez!

err, meanbeat.cbj.net has a cool set of analogue drums and basses, some of which are quite heavy.
At least they did when i checked last, some time last year...
On another note: samples =20% . equing/compressing/mxing =80%, if not 10/ 90
Marco
edit, seem to have moved!

Ok i went to the website, downloaded some of the programs that had neat descriptions, and then i tried installing one... when i pointed cyclotron to my vst plugin folder and tried to open it in cubase, it doesnt show up in the vst instrument list at all... even though the folder/dll is all there. help?Arcdev Mainliner X2:
http://www.device.arcanedevice.com/
Also, i installed mainline and it actually shows up and opens within cubase... but how do i use this program? When i've tinkered around with NI/Korg vsts, they install a complete front end that i can open up outside of sequencers and play around with, but with these it doesn't do that... i don't have my midi controller plugged in at the moment. If i plug it in do i just jab at the keys on my midi controller and it will all be sent through mainline? It doesn't seem to work with my keyboard keys like some other vsts do.. errr dunno if i'm making sense.
I hate being a n00b sometimes
*Edit - I also just tried to install ET-200 and it doesnt show up in the vst instrument list either... ahhhh

Mainliner is an instrument.. You'll need to send midi to it (thru your controller or midi tracks in cubase).
Cyclotron is an effect, you'll need to insert it over an audio track.

hey what can be boomyer than a pure sine wave am i right?
i agree with the above... try hipass your bass sound and then layer the same notes underneath with some sine waves.

You can make a sine wave sound heavy but unless you mess with the pitch of sample an 808 you wont get the punch very easily. Most of the time it was an 808 kick sample with loop points to loop 1 or 2 sine waves. Maybe then it was sent through a compressor for a bit more punch.
808 mods that allowed you to pitch the kick via MIDI were also popular back in the day.
Synth1 is good for 808 kicky bass with it's "M. Env" that you can link to the pitch to make it kick nice. To this day I still use 808 samples though.
