Colossus for $499!

Guitar Center is currently selling Colossus for $499. I just bought it at the store in Scottsdale, AZ. The salesperson said the sale lasts until the end of the month, and is the result of a special buy. It appears Musician's Friend (Guitar Center's online companion) is not offering this price. A price of $499 along with 15 months interest-free financing on the Guitar Center credit card was too hard to pass up! FYI.

One thing to understand about EastWest is that they believe, according to their license agreement, that you are only purchasing the right to use the samples. You do not own them. So if you become unsatisfied with them or no longer have a use for them, you are stuck with them. You cannot resell them to recoup any of your purchase. You should be made aware of this prior to purchase. I would bet that the salesman did not tell you this.

That's interesting, Flattop. I assume this will be true for anyone that "buys" receptor, regardless of the source of price, right? This is just an East West policy?

They claim that their samples are their property and you have no right to resell them for any reason. I would assume that for you to resell your Receptor, you would need to clean all EastWest sounds from the unit prior to sale. This would include Colossus, even if bundled with Receptor when originally purchased. If any of the Receptor guys would like to correct me, please do.

This is not a reflection upon the quality of their samples. I believe they are equal to the quality of the other top distributors of such things. This policy of theirs is quite maddening for legitimate purchasers, especially when the customer is not explicitly warned of this policy prior to purchase, which I assume you were not. I believe this is very dodgy legal ground for them, and may be more of a bully threat vs. a court case they can actually win. The exception is if you purchase directly from them via their webstore. Prior to checkout you must acknowledge their license. Here I believe they are on more solid legal ground since the customer is explicitly warned prior to sale.

I tend to favor companies like Native Instruments that allow a customer to resell the item if it no longer serves their purposes. Native Instruments makes top products also.
