But there is still much to gain in terms of work flow, consistency and simplicity.
Those are the main things XT2 will address, no?
I dunno... somehow it makes no sense to send envelopes meant to control a synth to any audio fx, or apply MIDI FX on an audio clip. I really think the possibility to add any type of data on any track=bus would only make things more confusing for me.
After all, the main window allow to freely route any kind of data (MIDI or audio) to either a synth or an effect. no limitations. Why should the sequencer impose such limitation on the user.
Well you can only send MIDI to MIDI ports, and audio to audio I/O... can't you also do this inside the sequncer? Ok if I want to do some exotic routings I "take it outside" just to get the nice visual environment.

Well that doesn't really answer my question but that sure is pretty.
But this means your question should probably be put on hold until we see how it's really done in xt2, because things are obviously changing...
Actually - no. Jorgen confirmed that there will be (many) different track types.
Also, I am not trying to convince anybody that things should be doneone way or another, simply asking what are the advantages of (and the logic behind) using a track-based instead of clip-based. The fact I can't think of any doesn't mean there aren't any.

Yeah it's good to have this sort of discussion, thanks for bringing it up.... but I wonder what would be the advantages of single track type?

Post

i see the advantges,

but then we need to clutter the sequencer mixer with all the options of all the different track types

but double click to add clip will have to be droped & replaced with a different system

Personally I like the T2 way, but I won't throw a fuss about it.
Looking forward to Drum tracks... Can they Kill the FL step sequencer?? :P

No more screen shots, please!
New beta, YES!

Yeah i really want to see this drum track thingy that Jorgen has implemented. And yes i know it works somewhat the same way like that drum module Jorg made (whatever it's called)...i don't care...i want to see it within EXT2.

Thank you and may god bless you all with his mighty wand.

According to Jorgen old post these will be much like the step seq in MachineII only (I'm counting on memory, so hopefully I get it all right):

* No fixed length - much like MIDI clips. This is a killer feature, because you can have patterns at any length you want.
* Can output MIDI to VST or trigger a sample.

The variable length, ghosting and XT's flexible routing will it a FL slayer. No doubt.

Once you've done the "unified track type" way, you realize that it's not a layer of confusion at all. It can really only benefit, as far as I can tell. The only reason to NOT do it comes down to nothing more than, "It seems weird and I'm not used to it," which isn't a good reason to not push forward!

Of course switching to a whole different approach require some changes in the intraface. This is why I know this is not going to happen - it's a too drastic change.
Just wanted to hear some thoughts on the subject.

I see what you mean but there are easy workarounds: modifer keys or keyboard shortcuts for instance. Not to mention you hardly need to insert a new audio clip.

Having said that, I love the double-click to insert clip method

Where's jens? I'd like to hear what he has to say on this.

i'm gonna take the screenshot and put it on a t-shirt or something

...ok but what are the actual benefits?

Just so I understand better, is Traction able to have Midi, Audio, and automation data all in the same track? And if that's the case, does the Midi, Audio, and automation data only go to the set of plugins (insert effects, midi effects, instruments) loaded onto that track?
