Hi everyone -new to the forum. glad I stumbled across it.

Anyways I believe I have kind of a basic question/concept regarding Rewire. Quick backround-
I have been doing computer recording for years(basiclly vocals, bass, guitars) and now want to incorporate vsti's in my projects. This is where I am a newbie. I do have Reason 3.0 which in itself I really like.
I have been trying demos of different apps to rewire Reason with( Reason as the slave-so I can play the Reason instruments.)I seem to be able to get most of the process working.
My understanding of Rewire is that I can send the audio from 1 program (Reason)as a left and right stereo track into Sony ACId Pro 6(for ex)to record.

BUT- 1)Lets say I drag a drum loop into track 1 of Acid Pro 6
2)If I try to record the audio from Reason into track 2 It records track 1 audio(drum loops)as well as the Reason audio. :(

Obviously this is not a problem if I was to record say a guitar track from my POD into track 2 instead. I just choose the Line in on my soundcard and that is all that is recorded.
But with recording the audio from Reason the only time it will record into a track is if "What U Hear" is checked. But of course this will record everything (including the track 1 drum loop) So obviously you see the dilemma.
This seems to happen with any app I have tried -Adobe Audition, Sonar 5, Sony Acid Pro 6
SO I ask
Can this even be done with rewire or is there something that I am expecting that it can't even do. Am I getting a basic concept all wrong :?

I am using a SB Audigy LS and I am using a M-audio midi keyboard controller plugged into the front USB on my computer.

Thanks a lot -could really use the help!!!! :help:

I think you are getting the basic concept wrong. Check out these tutorials, and if you're still having problems, let us know.

I'm glad you stumbled across us too, I just want to say welcome...:) Warmonger gave you some good advice, if you run into further problems please don't hesitate to ask...;)

Thanks for some quick reponses!
I did check those tutorials out. So basically is it that I need to arm a "Midi" track as opposed to an "Audio" track?
My original thought was that I could record a typical wave file in the Host from the Audio from Reason. Basiclly choose for ex, a Fender Rhodes in Reason and play the Rhodes along with a project composed in the host-with the audio from the Rhodes recorded as a wave. I was recording it as an "Audio track"

Thanks for your help

I really do not use rewire much, but in Adobe Audition 2.0 you can assign the audio outs of the rewire client to different tracks in AA. When you enable a rewire client it gives you options of how to assign the outs. You do your writing in the client (in my case FL6) and it syncs to AA. But like I say, I don't use rewire...I've just messed with it some, I like my workflow now...:)

I just tried out the Acid Pro 6 demo, and I can see why you might have problems.

I would recommend trying out the demo for Ableton Live. That's got one of the better Rewire implementations I've seen. It just takes a few clicks to get recording.

revilo, I think I know what you are doing wrong.

You're treating the Reason + rewire audio input like it's outboard hardware. You don't 'record' virtual instruments to audio, you render them. Since outboard stuff has to be recorded in real time, but virtual instruments can be rendered without the help of audio hardware, things are different.

What you need to do instead of arming tracks and recording Reason is to render them to a new track. Go to tools > render new track (or ctrl - m). Anything you have unmuted will now be bounced to a wav file which is then automatically inserted into your project.

This isn't universally the case. Many hosts that I've used treat Rewire as an audio input device just like a piece of hardware (e.g. Live, DP), while others don't (e.g. Tracktion, Acid). This is probably part of the reason Rewire can be a pain to set up.

Ah ok. Well this is how Acid works. And the other hosts I'm familiar with (Sonar and P5) act like this too.

well,
I think I have found a way for this to work for me. It is probably the way Rewire is supposed to work anyways-

This is with Acid Pro 6 as the host and Reason as the slave.
Basically what I do now is play my Acid pro track back thru Acid and record my Reason instrument along with it into THE SEQUENCER(which I did not do before!)in Reason. Of course the 2 programs are synched via Rewire. So now when I play back the sequencer track , I have an audio track armed(track 3) to record " What I hear" In Acid .I just mute the original drum track and guitar and bass parts in ACID because they are synched with my sequencer track from Reason.I record this sequencer audio into that track 3 I had armed.I did this all with audio tracks and no midi tracks. Problem solved.

Thanks for all the responses and if anyone actually wants me to explain the crap I tried to explain above better let me know.

This forum is great!Glad to have found it.
