Hey all, I'm somewhat new to using Soundfonts (well not using just for playing) but what I am wondering is what are the best (hopefully cheap/free) tools for creating your own SF2s? Also what do people think are the best tools for editing, adding loops points etc. to samples (wavs).

I think the best way to create and edit soundfonts is a Creative card + Vienna. There's a cheap rip-off soundfont editor called Viena (one n) at www.synthfont.com It's a pain in the ass, but it gets the job done.

Another one is Awave Studio , didn't try it before , but it seems it does couple of tasks.

The best program I've seen for editing loops is Extreme Sample Converter (EXSC), at http://extranslator.com. Great waveform display for the purpose, it's what I used to edit the loops for my free jRhodes3 soundfonts. At that site you'll also see a link to some tools I wrote to help assemble large multilayer multisample soundfonts, but it's for nerds and requires you to record your samples one velocity layer per wave file (which it then chops up into per-note samples).

For my future plans, see http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=134671.
