DMCA I was passed by Clinton in the US back in 1998. I'm pretty sure it applies to everyone the world over, too, but I could be wrong on that one.

It's also interesting to note that, according to the DMCA I law, it's illegal to use cracked software to work around bad copy protection, eventhough you've legally bought the same software.

And yeah, according to this, technically it's true. This Logic thing is kind of foggy, though. Beej made a good point about Logic 6. It'd probably be best just to play it safe. Other sequencers aren't hard to use at all. I went from FLStudio to Sonar, to eXT to Sonar and it was all pretty painless.

It's of course illegal to use any cracked version of Logic., what dumb question?
If you can find somebody on ebay selling a copy of Logic 5 PC, then of course that's legal... It's not rocket science.

As someone who pays for their software, I'm continually astounded at people here at KVR with their fervent hatred of Apple? As if Microsoft, Gateway, Dell, or Compaq are any better?

DMCA? Classic case of a bad law. Why is it bad? First, it's not enforced and unenforcable for the most part. Then it puts undue restrictions, and offers no protection whatsoever, for those who wants to abide by the law. Then, it gives way too much protection for software makers and vendors who might be unscrupulous, giving them blanket protection and free run to disregard basic consumer relation best practices, or even other laws as it stands.
In short, I think this law will eventually achieve the opposite of what it was made for.
No, that wasn't me.

As logic was just updated to 7.21 it can be hardly considered discontinued. Just it is not longer available for WindowsPCs does not mean it is discontinued. What is the next step - because Steinberg no longer updates Cubase SX 3.1 (as the official version is 3.11) it is obvious that it is discontinued, so let's get a crack?

Jeeeezzzz

If i where you i would just buy EXT (Wich is much better and will be even better when V2 comes out) :D
But EXT doesn't have support for video and score editing like Logic did, right? I wouldn't say EXT's better; just different.
Well, is there already video in Windows PCs? Jeeezzzz, oh yeah, yesterday I was trying to help some windows users to make a VideoDVD - was I long time that I did not laugh. Maybe I should more often work together with windows users.javascript:emoticon('')

Hmmm having video in a OS and having video that syncs up to a sequencer are too totally different things. Not a big deal to people who dont have to write music for video right? But a big userbase of Logic are film composers.

Well that is true, but i can't see how people manage to be creative with something they steal....
If they need something that support video then they should look at sonar homestudio 4 instead (Wich is damn cheap when you think of all the features you get).
I own and use SH4 & XT and love them both for what they do ;)

Thanks for all the replies, guys. Looks like I'll try out energyXT instead. I've recently gone 100% legit, and I've stopped downloading cracks and stuff. I feel much better about myself now :) . Making music is so much easier and enjoyable when you're don't feel guilty for not supporting programmers who make quality software. I feel more connected with the world and stuff...

...ahem...

So anyways, I'll hold off on the Logic thing for now, at least until I can find a copy for cheap. Thanks again.

It only applies in the USA...

Washington doesn't rule the world... Yet.

OK, it's at least MORALLY right to do it, and I'm not going to argue about that. Legally, it's mostly not OK, but usually the companies do not make any attempts to prevent it. (I mean, I have a cracked Synoptic Probe, Synoptic won't sue me because Synoptic is no more :( Generally, read this article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abandonware
It has a nice discussion of how this works, and even tough it's mostly about games, I found it useful.

That wasn't what I meant. I thought maybe the US and other parts of the world reached an agreement, and that the US wasn't the only country passing this law. ...or something.
