Comparing Logic to eXT (or recommending eXT *instead* of Logic) is silly at best and you know it.
Chances are that XT2 will be a *lot* more competitive, but as for now it's not.
Don't get me wrong, I love eXT to death, but when you look at things such as audio file handling (which is just pathetic), user-defineable keycommands (not existant), dual monitor support (quasi non existant), it's just clear that you can't compare them.
Sure, eXT does a TON of things Logic could only dream of (which is exactly why I love it so much), but that doesn't make the comparison anymore valid.
As far as the legal aspects go, they're all well covered. Using the cracked version is illegal, no matter how you put it.
On a sidenote: Even if I am completely aware of the illegal-ness of using cracked software, even if I am a legit user of 5.5.1/PC, I am highly tempted to install the cracked version on my laptop though. In case I'm losing (or breaking) the dongle I will simply be f**ked. There's no replacement dongles anymore, the new ones are Mac-only and finding a fully authorized replacement will be tough, to say the least. Any dealers still having it in stock won't help either as the internal instruments (which a lot of my work heavily relies on) can't be authorized on old dongles anymore, and the versions you can get in stores don't have anything authorized.
However, in case you're no Logic user yet, I wouldn't start using it under Windows. Get something else. Or get a Mac.

It's a good point - if your PC Logic dongle breaks, Apple (being Apple) will say, "sure, no problem, just buy a Mac and Logic 7 and you'll be good to go".
It's a good example of what happens when the software company are no longer in business and thus can't support the copy-protection. Quite simply, you're f*cked, and your (significant) investment in the software is wasted (at least if you don't have/want to get a Mac).
My key has Logic Pro for both Mac and PC on it, but if it ever broke, Apple would replace it with a Mac-only key, thus I'd lose access to my PC version. Kinda scary...

And that's just one of the reasons why dongles suck.
Seriously, since their change of the dongle brand, this little piece of plastic and metal has become the most worthy piece of my studio. That simply can't be right.
One of the reasons I started to even prefer C/R protection, especially since NI (which is the company I'm using C/R products from) is explicitely stating that they'd release some non-machine-bound versions should they go out of business.
But ok, I'll try to not start another "I hate dongles so much" debate. I just do and nothing will change that.

Yeah, it may be ok indeed - in case you planned on commiting suicide anyways. It'll be a great helper then.

Reading this, I'm totally shocked. Beyond belief.Sascha Franck wrote:

You mean that a product for which you have paid for wouldn't be useable anymore because the company who made it, and sold, refuse to authorize you to use it? On what ground could they possibly excuse this?
Isn't there a law somewhere against blatant fraud like this? Or is not the basic anti-fraud law apply?
That something like this could go on unpunished...what can I say, I'm flabbergasted
No, that wasn't me.

Hi Sascha. I saw a used dongle for 5.5 on ebay not long ago cheap. I was considering getting 5.5, and was scrounging around. I did some research and distinctly recall asking if I could get the dongle authorized and being told yes (I may have been misinformed, of course).Sascha Franck wrote:There's no replacement dongles anymore, the new ones are Mac-only and finding a fully authorized replacement will be tough, to say the least.
Perhaps You could keep an eye on ebay.

Yeah well...bullshark wrote: Reading this, I'm totally shocked. Beyond belief.
Thing is, apparently they just don't have the facilities anymore to authorize Windows dongles. You mean that a product for which you have paid for wouldn't be useable anymore because the company who made it, and sold, refuse to authorize you to use it? On what ground could they possibly excuse this?
However, I'm not entirely sure either.
I wonder what might happen when the dongle would indeed break - I'm almost sure they still have some of them somewhere, just to ensure they wouldn't be running into serious troubles. But if that'd be the case, it'd surely be goodwill rather than their official policy.
No idea whether this would qualify.Isn't there a law somewhere against blatant fraud like this? Or is not the basic anti-fraud law apply?
I mean, when you buy some hardware, you basically buy it "as is" with some limited warranty on *some* parts of it. And of course that warranty is only valid for a certain number of months/years as well.
With software, you usually buy (or license) it entirely "as is".
Now, with dongles protecting software being some sort of a mixed approach, things might be different.
Would be interesting to see how a possible lawsuit would turn out.
But, apart from all that, in the past Emagic behaved extremely well in cases of dongle loss or so. They just asked you for an affordable fee. Not so with Steinberg. When you lose your Syncrosoft dongle, you gotta buy the package again. Full price, no mercy! It just happened to someone on the german Cubase mailing list.
It's like losing the key to your car or house would mean you'd entirely lose your car/house.
Now *that's* something that can't go unpunished.

From what I know, this has recently been changed (at the same time the old Emagic website finally went down). Before there's still been some minimal Windows support (you could even buy their education versions for PC until then), but now all you can find is a link to a few downloads and that's about it.sboullion wrote:Hi Sascha. Guess anything else would be goodwill gestures.
One thing's for sure: I won't pay for a software twice, just because my dongle might break. I'd defenitely install the crack in that case.Perhaps You could keep an eye on ebay.
Besides, I already have a second dongle, authorized for 7.x too, just waiting for a Mac to be plugged into.
