FilterscapeVA - FM on it's own?

Hi --

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the routing of FilterscapeVA, but at the moment i'm viewing the controls for RM, FM 2>1, Osc1 and Osc2 as levels of the various primary sources.

So .. If i have Osc1 and Osc2 turned off, why can't i get any signal from FM alone? I guess it's actually a modulated version of whatever is coming out of osc1 and osc2 at that time - so altering the volume of either also affects the modulation in a secondary manner?

FM is the modulation of osc 2 by osc 1. Therefore if you can't hear osc 2 you won't hear it being frequency modulated either...

But yet if I have Osc2 and FM turned up, and Osc1 turned off, then changing the waveform of Osc1 does make a difference to the sound.

So in this case I can't hear Osc1 but it does make a difference.

Sure. That's the point.

Osc1 frequencymodulates Osc2. If you turn Osc2 volume to 0.00, you can't hear it. If you turn Osc2 up while Osc1 is inaudible, you can just hear the pure FM'd Osc2. Anything else wouldn't be logical...

Okay thanks - I understand now.

I had assumed each oscillator controls were independent. and then FM was an independent 'level' for a modulated version of the two.

Yeah, hehe, that would be nice, indeed. But this would mean having to calculate Osc2 twice, which would be very expensive, cpu-wise. The way it's done now is pretty traditional, it's just like in the old vintage synths...
