"Free Amp" - not too bad.

Boogex - I'm shocked at all the happiness it's created in here. I just don't see it. Pretty lame to me.

Tube Baby - Now HERE was one that I've had a little fun with. Pretty simple, but I got to the "Fat Rock 2" setting, tweaked it just a tad, and that's pretty close to what Iommi was getting with his Laney around '72-'74. Has that cool low-mid "Grunt". I've always like that one. :D
Here's what I don't like about this sort of post: it's not specific at all. Telling us that an ampsim "sucked" won't help us know what you didn't like, and it certainly won't help any devs reading this thread looking to make/improve an ampsim. Why did it suck (I know you've been saying it in other posts in the thread, but I'm really saying this to everyone who griefs about plugs in general).

What did it do that was bad? What didn't it do that was bad? What would you change about it. If you can't say it technically, say it however you can and maybe we'll all figure it out.

Did you check Noisevault, grymmjack?

I think you still are allowed to DL/install those OEM versions of RT Player Express and GT Player Express intend for M-Audio card users.

Juha
Yeah, after I posted that I went to the M-Audio website and found where I could download the express version. Because of the many limitations it's not as good the full version, so uh, think I'm gonna hafta go on ahead and purchase this thing. I think I said earlier in this thread that I wasn't in the market for any new amp sims, but this thing literally blew me away so that's out.

And I did play with the edit function for a while. I like the feature that allows you to put other vst effects in the chain before the amp. Cool stuff with a ton of options.

Seems like we're the only two people checking this thing out, though. Y'all should give it a try. Especially if you're into heavier guitar tones.

Of all the tracks there, it has by far the best guitar tones. It'd be funny to hear if the other ones were real amps. ;)

That said, it's still not really what most people would consider good tone. Many punk bands may be alright with it but Black Flag certainly upgraded as soon as they got the budget. I realize that we all have different standards as to what good tone really is but it'd be nice if someone could come out with good Twin & Plexi simulations.

Lunch Money wrote:It's already been mentioned in the thread, but it bears repeating-- that "balls to the walls" thud you in the chest with power sound comes from an amp and is partially a physical response. You can literally feel it hit you. Also, the effect of sheer volume is not to be overlooked.

But you take that real amp, mic it, and put it in a MIX, and play back the recorded sound and you'll find that you're playing with the same kids as the amp sims. ;)

Pretty sure it's also been mentioned that layering is important for thick massive guitars, too... some of the "legendary" metal amps (5150, I'm looking at you) don't actually sound all that great in isolation, either. It's placebo effect making you think they're better than they are.
that is what i was trying to get at, it is the same deal for the whole "tube" trend, and the "analog" subtractive trend. some of the gear does sound good, but if you turn off all the effects and record some clean tracks, compared to the software there isnt any real difference. companies have gone so far to rape all benefit from the tube trend that they've actually put little led's behind tubes or objects that look like tubes which are not even connected or only play a minor role in the circuit. i cant name names, but i'm sure you guys can.

maybe the placebo is more important than the sound?

While I agree that many tube circuits are done incorrectly, I've never seen or heard of anyone doing this. If anything, tube circuits are only getting better now that companies like Electro Harmonix, Hughes & Kettner, & even ART are using plate voltages of 300+.

Anyway, I think we can all agree that we shouldn't be using Crate or other such amps as the point of reference.

could you please tell me which ART preamps have this?

I would be interested in perhaps buying one. (esp dual with limiter)
check my profile for contact info.

I use it almost every track when im recording loud bands like this.

Just not my thing. I reckon it's okay for something like that, but...... PS: Just how compressed CAN you get it? :D

There. Most of those were recorded with my '83 Boogie Mk IIC. Just about all those sounds you hear are with the master volume on 0 - very quiet, because my wife will snatch my balls off and feed the dogs with them. No compression, no EQ - just mic placement and that's it. I might stick a little reverb on it, or delay, but that's about it.

It normally takes me 2 seconds to throw a mic on it, another second or two to hit record, and then I'm done. No hassles, no tweaking (unless I tweak the amp for a few things every now and then), but I've got enough balls there to keep Monica Lewinsky happy for the rest of her life with no wasted time.

Screw me for liking somethings simple and real, but I still like a few REAL things making the music.

The MPA Gold, although I really recommend not getting this preamp. It's really thin sounding despite the proper plate voltage. I've heard good things about the EH.

I wnnted to hate your tone because this reply is kinda condescending... but damn that IS nice. Cool tune, too. The fat cow thingy, I mean.

Hey man - I appreciate it. Look - I don't really have any problems with some of these things, and I'm actually blown away with how far some of these cats have come with this stuff. I used to laugh at anything that didn't have actual tubes in it, but damn if these cats aren't doing well with it nowdays!

I'm just saying it's just easier for me to stick a 57 (or 58 in that case) in front of a Celestion and let her rip! :D

Dials, numbers, scopes and all that other stuff is great, but I'm kinda one of those guys who's just into doing stuff quick. (Lazy :D ).

You got some great tunes there, man!
And one thing's for certain: You usually don't hear sounds like that coming from amp sims, at least not without endless tweaking.
But then, of course the playing adds a lot as well (and you seem to be doing quite well).

Behringer Ultragain Pro, wasn't it? I think this was the story that first said it, but I've no idea if it's a spoof.
