While I agree that many tube circuits are done incorrectly, I've never seen or heard of anyone doing this.

Behringer Ultragain Pro, wasn't it? I think this was the story that first said it, but I've no idea if it's a spoof.

It is true in whole behringer series of rack equipment with tubes in it. My friend and me have opened one few years ago (I think it was tube composer compressor) and similar thing, box was mostly empty, and there was small 5w lightbulb behind the tube. I mean, it is just cosmetics, they wanted to make it nice and shiny...

the guy who wrote the article never said the tube wasnt connected, he was mad at having a lame glowing led in a peice of what is supposed to be professional equipment. it makes it really obvious that the equipment is really a toy when it has such a feature.. sure it may be capable of professional use, but consider the real target consumer here.. its intended as a toy.

that is all i was saying, i think tube stuff, analog subtractives, cube amps, those are all just toys. i dont think there is really that much of a difference between the line recorded tone of any of that equipment and simmilar software. if you're looking for the toy-features.. get the hardware, not the software.

if you're going to be scientific about things and record clean line level signals, it isnt going to be any different. if you want to play, you need to play with the toys, its a simple fact. nowhere here will i say there is anything wrong with playing though, i have my own gear i use as toys and it is very enjoyable to use. i dont feel any of the stuff i own, or really much of the simmilar stuff others own is nearly as practical to use for making music as software is.

Gotta admit that Empty Uranus' tracks had great tone... <grumble>...

I don't think that the Line6 tones are out of that league, though. I've gotten some really lively sounds out of the TonePort.

Others I've tried here in the last few hours:

"Tube Amp" - sucked.

"Free Amp" - not too bad.

Boogex - I'm shocked at all the happiness it's created in here. I just don't see it. Pretty lame to me.

Tube Baby - Now HERE was one that I've had a little fun with. Pretty simple, but I got to the "Fat Rock 2" setting, tweaked it just a tad, and that's pretty close to what Iommi was getting with his Laney around '72-'74. Has that cool low-mid "Grunt". I've always like that one.

I am using Guitar Rig 2 and some ol' cheap VST plugin called "StompnFX', with good results. I suspect that your capabilities are lacking, not the programs.

Again - I'm talking about getting the biggest, stinkiest distorted sounds without it sounding like it came from a fukkin' shoebox.

After you've done this for as long as I have, you can hear the gnads or not.

If you're looking for a sound that isn't complete balls to the wall, then I'm sure you've found your panacea. Mind you, you can muster up a good fart and get those "slightly overdriven" sounds you're probably talking about. Anybody, and I mean ANYBODY can get those sounds....

I can get a very good totally distorted sound with Guitar Rig, so I don't see what your problem is.

two choices.

1) start building and designing your own amps and cabs.

2) start modeling and programming your own amps and cabs.

to make a decent sounding unique design, you'd have to have knowledge and experience of either of the two anyway, as no high level "amp sim environment" alone is going to help.

The best place to start in this case would be electronics, for the sheer amount of information and existing well estabilished practises and schematics freely available for your modifications.

Sure. I reckon so. But don't you recognize the art of "convenience"? While you take 3 solar days to do that, it takes me 5 seconds to point a 58 at a Celestion and not even come CLOSE to touching a filter, EQ, compressor - ANYTHING - PLUS - this is NOT a cranked amp. Again - this is about as quiet as I can get it! Those guitar sounds are 100% natural unless you hear delay or reverb on them. No compression, no nothing on them. If you start stomping on things too much, the sound will begin to suffer.

I love this stuff, but I'm not going to spend the better part of my life trying to get a guitar sound when I can get it in less than a minute.
