I do hate it when older guys start screaming about "dynamics" in heavy guitar music. It seriously makes you sound ancient. TURN THAT NOISE DOWN YOU YOUNG PUNKS! IN MY DAY OUR GUITARS HAD DYNAMICS, YOU COULD LIKE, PLAY SOFT AND IT WAS SOFT.

The kind of stuff he was demonstrating is not meant to be dynamic, it's meant to be a nonstop sledgehammer to your head. That's what you old schools don't seem to get.

It's fine if you don't like it... hell, it's not the kind of stuff I'd rock out to either... But don't tell them how their guitar SHOULD sound. They're the artists, they know how they want it to sound.
 thanx for the laugh...he used it to show what he considers to be a good sound...if we disagree because we're older we shouldn't respond? What grade are you in? I am thankful when I was a kid many older people took the time to help me out...my comments were polite and accurate...especially about the mix being too loud...as in clipping get it? I never ever said how he should sound, I only pointed out that it was hard to tell because of the mix quality...it's called constructive criticism.

funny too, it seems too me you just said less dynamics are good....so why buy expensive software? If you want to have a lack of dynamics record it on an old cassette recorder...if you want to learn how dynamics can improve the non stop sledgehammer (yes that is possible) than perhaps you might learn a thing or two from us ancient people, it's not like your generation invented the sound, and many of my generation are out there doing the whole sledgehammer thing quite well.

Whoa nelly! I never said that, I only said that "dynamics" wasn't what his aim was. Dynamics can be great. Expressive even! And that's never bad.

And my comment was more in general, not at you specifically. So sorry if offense was taken.

My basic point was that if a guy is happy with his tone people should let him be happy with it. He didn't post a clip asking for what can be done to improve it, he posted a clip as an example of what he thought a good heavy tone was.

Constructive critisicm is fine and all, but...

"Jesus christ that's the worst thing I've ever heard. Is that a joke?" -

Yeah, not a good example of constructive criticism.

Just sayin'.

I still think everyone who's the least bit interested in distorted guitars should read this guy's tutorial over and over. (yes, I've posted this before)
An audio engineer posted this over a few weeks a couple of years ago on a forum for AEs. It's hilarious, disrespectful, foul and full of tips on how to get GREAT tone. It's a compiled version of the thread, which had lots of good comments in it as well...

Enjoy. :D

thanx for clearing it up, no offense taken. I agree 100% that comments like "the worst thing I ever heard" is terrible...I hope he didn't take my comments as such, because that's not my bag...it's all about expression, and no one has the right to judge that imo...:)

Some songs require dynamics - some don't. THAT's the key. Does the SONG call for it. I'm a HUGE fan of dynamics, but each song can have it's own thing.

I can tell most of you are guitarists (no shit, me), but one thing you've always got to remember - a guitar is just PART of the song. If the song calls for dynamic guitar playing - so be it. If the song calls for stripping the nuts off of dead elephants - then so be it.

A guitar is NEVER more important than the song. That's like saying the quarterback is the ONLY important thing on a football team. Let's see what that asshole does without an OL. :D

I'm still partial to my Boogie, and always will be. BUT - in the short time I've been here, I appreciate some of the things you guys have showed me - certainly like Warren did.

That's what's cool about a place like this. It can even teach old farts like me a new thing or two. 8)

I've done my best to stay away from this thread, but I can't help but say how hard a laugh I had at the "Dynamics can be great. Expressive Even".

Sorry if no one else finds that funny...but I think it's golden irony.

It was the exclamation point that really drove it home, right? But seriously, thank you. I'll be here all week. Try the veal. And remember to tip your waitress.

Also, everyone read Empty Uranus' last post. That was good stuff right there. The part about me was my favorite.

A guitar is NEVER more important than the song.
no offense but that's not all that accurate...a better way of putting it imo is a guitar is not always more important than the song there are after all many fine songs that are just guitar, without the guitar there would be silence.

FWIW for me the guitar has always been what it is about, however having been exposed to new things, mostly thanx to KVR and the similar, this old fart has changed his ways on that as well. In fact I wont name names (pm and all), but before I had my laptop crash last week I was working on something very different for me...I asked a younger member here (and a very old, old member as well, very, very very old...so old he can't remember to listen to it :hihi: ) what genre he thought it was...I found this to be quite a compliment.
I dont know what frikkin genre this would fit in, I totally hate genres man... hehe. wow, the part at about 3:20 is really neat and TOTALLY unexpected. I am actually sort of surprised. I really dont want you to take offense at this, but normally when i think about older guys that do music i think of people who are just stuck in their way and dont evolve. I think you have broken my idea of this.
Thankfully I have it backed up on my external hard drive...but I can't think of much better compliments than that...so I hear what you're saying cause this song is not about guitar (but there is some nice guitars in it), hopefully by the end of the month it will be done...:)

BTW imo the best work I ever did, and it was born from listening to criticisms of many members here.

I think it is time for guitarists as well as music lovers to understand something:

GRANDPA WAS AT WOODSTOCK

Yep. Most of the musicians that played at the Woodstock festival are old enough to be grandparents.

Guitar distortion turned forty a few years ago. I actually feel sorry for younger musicians and listeners who have embraced harder rock as their own...Marylin Manson? He dresses in drag? Bowie did that THIRTY f**king YEARS AGO.

Perhaps that's the problem with distortion. It used to mean something. I remember when I was a small child the first time I heard a loud, well-played, distorted guitar.

Honestly, it was one of the most powerful feelings I had ever felt up until that time. I was astonished.

Now, distortion is passe. Anybody with a $50 Peavey and -- yes -- a Bad Monkey pedal, can make the same sound.

Big deal?

I still love distortion, but I love beethoven, too and guitar distortion is quickly taking it's place in music as something as commonplace as the acoustic piano.

dude....I'm a grandfather, but I agree with you to a point...I think the distortion of the 60s and 70s sucked...I started playing guitar in 71. I really do not care for true fuzz, nor do I care much for distortion pedals. Myself I found better results by over-driving the pre-amp tubes for distortion...however I do feel that at least in my pod xt live they do achieve this same sound I like pretty well....of course there is a tonal difference, I would describe it as a spongy feel to be honest. But it's nothing like the lame solidstate distortion that were on solidstate amps back then.

However another big difference is what you don't hear. Last night my neighbors downstairs were being very loud, I didn't play anything...I just cranked my live rig up and muted strings 1-5 and let the 6th string (guitar tuned DGDGBbD) vibrate very loud....shook the walls proper....however the hiss was horrid...I plugged the xt live into my power amp and it was far quieter....I hate hiss, I really do...there's a trade off I'm willing to make. I can get the sounds I want (harmonic squeals are important to me), but my distortion is far cleaner which frees up headroom for my guitar. I wouldn't trade my xt live for my old plexi head (at least not for playing, I could have a couple xt lives for what I could sell the plexi for :hihi:), and for years I was a tube only snob...

Experience means nothing to most kids because they don't have any. Then, when they grow up, they realise it's the only real thing anyone ever has...

The irony is, you say this in relation to guitar distortion.

Not your grampa's stompbox.
