Is there still a club called 'Uncle Sams' in Macon?

WHOA!!!!!!!!!!! OLD TIMER!!!!!! :D

Wow - nah - they closed it down back in the mid to late 70's... It's been the Moose Club ever since. If you know of Uncle Sam's, I'm sure you remember the old Stillwater song, "Sam's Jam"????

Big Capricorn freak here - Grew up in Macon and could tell you stories forever and a day. Too bad the place has gone to complete hell in a handbasket now. :(

You want stories?

Dont wanna name-drop -- but I played there with some folks a coupla times. Stayed at a little motel -- think it was a Holiday Inn. Me and the drummer went up to the front office and Big Linda was in there crying. Asked her what was wrong, she said her car was stuck in the graveyard. Went over there with her to try to get the car unstuck and found that one wheel was hanging off the steep driveway. Me & Rick stood on Berry Oakley's grave stone to shove his wife's rear wheel back on the drive. Now that was freakin spooky. I love Macon. ;)

sorry about the OT

Alex

Uhh HInk Im not sure what that post had to do with the fact I agree that soft distortion is lacking.. But I have a feeling we have been thru this before, but I will tomorrow(friday) post what I think is the all time best HIGH gain I mean super HI-Gain soft distortion yet. haha I know everyone will say it sucks becasue of that statement, but I worked and tweaked and tweaked and now I think I have found a sort of hybrid conclusion. ALthough I have seen others use a similar set-up but I havent heard anyone post anything like what I will post tomorrow, ITs the closest sound of a true TUBE amp pushing the f**king limits, and if I roll back the gain it gets a very nice hard rock crunch.. hah oh yeah and the good thing is most people might be able to reproduce something similar, becasue most of the plugs would be available in most hosts. and the sim is free.. Although my secret weapon is all mine and unless you are the 1 in about 50,000 to have what I have, you cant exactly reproduce, but.... until then...

dude only part of it was really about you, so please don't sweat it....my only point to you there is a little kindly advice from someone whose been down the road some....and that is just always keep an open mind, even on things you're quite sure of....if not for any other reason than sometimes when you're in a rut breaking one of those rules sometimes sparks creativity...and tbh you may end up not using any of the "broken rules" in the long run, but they can spark a fire of fun that put's you back on track.

The rest was me just really getting something off my chest that's been bugging me...I know my good friend is gonna ride his harley right smack into a mid life crisis very soon, and there's not a damn thing I can do to help him...mine hit the spring of 03, my sister died december of 02 and it started the ball rolling. FWIW look at the date I joined here, I bought my first vst the summer of 03...before that I used all hardware and then I mixed it to ce2k (I didn't get my first computer until 00)...a new world got me through my mid life....but I'm sure a couple floopers remember back then when I was not quite so pleasent.

So again please don't take it personally, just keep at it and never say never...;)

I look forward to your link.

I don't mean to sound cranky, but what I would REALLY love to hear in a soft distortion is Eric Clapton-style overdrive of a subtle and tasteful variety. This, it seems to me is more difficult than balls-to-the-walls distortion.

Then again, a $12,000 vintage Strat wouldn't hurt too much either. Can someone somebody make me that plugin?

I'm not sure that's the tone that KV will post, I could be wrong but he's talking more of high gain sounds used in today's metal. TBH you could get that clapton sound easier than the high gain sound with software and/or things like a pod....though the best simple recording answer would be a sansamp for that sound.

Drive about 50%
Treble a little above 50 %
Presence (if you have it) about the same as the treble
mids about 60-70%
Bass about 50%

If you have stompboxes or stompbox emulation use an overdrive for a newer clapton sound....use fuzz for an earlier clapton sound. If you are using overdrive, go light with the drive keep the tone about equal between bass and treble and attenuate the output with the gain control.

That should give you a good jumping off point...if you need to tweak start with the drive on the amp and the treble and/or presense (likely turning them down some).

A 12,000 dollar strat won't make the difference if you dont have the tone. The clapton signature model has lace sensors for pick-ups. If you have a strat though (and this is just a matter of taste) I would go with the stacked humbuckers n(passive) that take up a single coils slot if possible. I think you'll likely get closer by using the neck and middle pick-ups if using a strat, other wise try the neck pick-up first, or combo of the neck and bridge.

The clapton sound is not a screaming overdrive/hi-gain like many...it's more a smooth laid back subtle tone with plenty of sustain...try to get the sound with the guitar volume at about 75%, that way you can get more umph if you need it...also if your guitar has tone controls you may find that rolling back on the tone control(s) a little will cut out the screaming while still maintaining the sustain, but dont over adjust the tone controls or as the electronics are passive you'll get the "wet blanket on your speakers" sound..:)

Wow! I don't know if she's around here. I know who she is/was, but that was actually a little before my time "on the scene". By the time I'd started playing around in here in the early 80's, the whole Capricorn thing was pretty dead....

A sad shame - a lotta great music came out of this place....

Last I heard, she and Butch's ex Little Linda moved to Jacksonville and opened up a boutique or something.

Yeah, Capricorn was a very happening place for a lot of good years, as well as Muscle Shoals a bit afterwards. :)

Lots of wonderful history lay in the cracks of those peaceful sidwalks mate -- an amazing legacy for sure. I think you're absolutely lucky to be living therer (wish I could afford it)

IN case anyone is still freakin interested I will be postin up some MP3's in about 20 minutes if my uploads go well, which sometimes they dont, My internet computer sucks balls and dial up.. I made (what I think is a classic hi gain and what I think is modern Death metal HI gain) So to peak a little interest IM posting this nonsense first, It was a long day at work so thats the delay. IN chicago it is hot and HUMID as f**k and sanding hardwood floor really makes for a sweaty day, Very tough day, but somehow I love when it is this warm and is physically extreme, but I was born in Florida and perhaps those few years there made me like the extreme heat. 20 minutes!!!

All right here ye go.. First is a classic type hi gain, FIrst off I want to say I have access to 2 amps that I play regularly. One is my trusty crusty 5150. I freaking love this amp so my tastes lean towards this type of hi gain, yes it has a top end fizz or whatver you want to say but that to me is beautiful tubes being pushed. The Death metal hi gain sound I am showing here is so damn close to my 5150 I am almost f**king happy I think it is very close. And 2 I want to say I have seen a million threads on guitar sounds lately and it usually says somewhere "Stop trying to emulate a "real" amp and enjoy what this software is." Well not me I did my best at trying to get this to sound like tube amps since thats WHAT I LIKE!!! And no one needs to say "well go play tube amps." Casue I do and I am as big of a naysayer on software amps as anyone./.

And my second amp I have access to(not mine) Is a early 80's JCM 800, which I also love quite a bit as well, so my classic Hi gain sound reminds of that amp.. so here you go.

Classic HI gain (ALL SOFTWARE, ANtares Tube, little devil tube, and JCM 900, and a litle lo -cut at 60 with Kjaerhus GEQ 7. I usually cut more but to keep it real only 60. I tried to play some open chords as well. TO show the saturation, If anyone were to ask me what my favorite classic guitar sound is, AC/DC yes good but no! Rush from Moving Pictures, that is a good of guitar sound as any and it is so damn saturated, probably the most I ever heard, I love that sound

ANd HI SUPER HIGH gain. (Again Antares Tube LIttle ANgel tube or something Angel, JCM 900 and my little secret for now, This has a hardware element that I doubt anyone would have so thats why I am not posting it. Again some open chords and some Death metal with a little sweeps at the end to show how great it sounds on solos.

All this was tracked thru my Presonus Eureka, which is defintly a huge help into EMu1820m line inputs into Cubase SX 2, NO compression or eq besides the 60hz cut was applied, both these clips have too much low end, but since it is just guitar, it is nice to hear the low..

OK

Nah not really, If you look back WAY back on that Free amp beta released thread(edit: Actually it was the freeAmp1.5 what do you want thread) you will see I said exactly what you say about it, but I realized its limitations and didnt push the envolope. Its not made for what I want or you either apperantly, and you can say you are being constructive and making it better , but it won't happen. Its the nature of things, ou have to find your own way. Thats the only reason I tried my ass off to try and find decent sim sounds, I have access to great amps good mics and a rehearsal room where noise is never an issue anytime and I wouldnt ever record with sims, but a part of me wants to find a way just to prove I can do it, And for me I did, Im not out asking people to "figure" out a sound for me when the program simply can't do it. I really dont see why you are pushing that FreeAmp thread like you are, but apparently you have a bunch of people trying to appease your desires and that must be somewhat substantial, if not humiliating for the folks trying to find that sound for you./

No thanks. I skimmed some of your posts in it and they were all crap. I mean, don't take that the wrong way or anything, it's just that I don't like crap. I'm only telling you that to be constructive. Like, try to make your future posts have less crap... because currently they're just mostly crap.

Crap.

Crappity crap crap crap.

Crapalicious craptacular crap.

But don't take offense, please. Although if you do it's probably you and not me. It probably means you're like, "on the rag", or something.

Post

Uh what about those clips I posted are they Crappity crap crap crap, or Crapilicious craptacular crap, or god forbid crap? I honestly put a lot of time into that shit, Put every piece of gear/crap :) I had to try something. I just listened again and damn if they dont sound good to me.. Best ever :) :drunk:

heh, that's what it's all about though, right? finding the perfect tone for yourself that gives you the goosebumps? that's cool that you acheived it for yourself.

no your tone wasn't crap. it was good. it's too dirty for me, I like my distortion to be smoother personally. the tone that that guy Empty Uranus had on his 'fat cow' tune that he linked to earlier, that to me is an example of great tone.
