Oh, I knew you knew. That's why I said I wish I was as smart as you. You're like Stephen Hawking... if he was a half assed guitar player with no social skills who posted on internet message boards.
hehe, actually, i said the sounds I was getting from it were crap. I had actually attributed this to my lack of knowledge of the sim initially.
Well, that's part of it. The other part of it is that your playing was crap. That clip was lifeless, sterile, and boring.

Crap. No offense, of course.
the WERE sensitive, yelling at me for criticizing a "Free gift" free or not, i dont care, if i like the sound or dont, im gonna say so. And you seem to have similar sensitivity...
You were attacking it. Your methods of dealing with people is what is lacking. It's not them, it's you.

And since you outed yourself as a troll with the "bait" comment, I'll now leave you for your next "victim".

You smartie you.

:) thanks for your opinion, and sorry if i hurt your feelings

p.s. the clip was meant to demonstrate the sound, not technique; I even mentioned i played it wrong at one point. No one else seemed to have a problem with it, but im glad your uber-discerning ears picked up on my lack of talent. 8)

Hey, even a guy as idiotic as me knows crap guitar playing when he hears it. No need to praise me for it. But it's nice nevertheless.

Ah. So without sims, you're just putting a stomp-box through an cab? No. There's still the entire AMP to be factored in. A stomp box into a pristine clean channel of a solid-state amp or into a P.A. channel pretty much sounds like crap, too, which is exactly the sound you'd get by putting on a cab impulse into a D.I. stompbox. Units like the TS808, Guv'nor, or good ol' OD-1 are meant to go in front of an amp, more often than not on an already dirty channel.
Pod is essentially software as well, but while the POD doesnt amaze me either, it is a better solution becasue of the fact it has a dedicated input, like any amp would.
Such a weird justification. Anyone who knows anything about using an AMP sim will have an impedance-matched input. Whether it's proprietary like the units by Amplitube, Guitar Rig, TonePort, or GTR (what do you call THOSE, if not dedicated inputs?); or whether it's a simple D.I. running into the soundcard (again, you don't get much more dedicated than impedance-matching), at the end of the day it's just an input. Those are exactly the same as the one on the POD, so I don't know how "the fact it has a dedicated inpu, like any amp" somehow puts it ahead of any other sims. No, what sets the POD apart is the fact that it has good modelling, not a dedicated input. Bizarre.
ANd also has cab modeling. Software sims on the other hand is at the mercy of whatver soundcard or input that the user has, and this can really make the signal going in suffer, which will make the software suffer, and not to mention latency with computers.
"At the mercy of" makes it seem like you don't have the choice. As mentioned already, most of the top-tier software HAS a line of dedicated inputs; but that aside, all it takes is a Hi-Z to line-level conversion... which many people already have, or can easily add. As for latency with computers, unless you've been in the dark ages you'll find that 3ms is a common latency these days. 3ms is undetectable. But, for the sake of argument let's say that you DO notice. There's still the TonePort with its "ToneDirect" system, interacting with Gearbox, which is software. It's not software that's the issue there, either. If, for example, Guitar Rig + ASIO is incapable of the kinds of low latencies that you want, it's still obviously not an impossibility. I seriously doubt that AAllll the guitarists in the world who have done just fine with 2.9 ms latency are ALL wrong about how responsive it is. I personally get get by with anything 6ms or less, though I admit to preferring the "ToneDirect."

Greg
of course I agree with you, but I would like to point something out...if you change dedicated input to dedicated pre-amp stage it might be different (I stress might, I do not know as much about how pods and sims are made as I do understand about electronic amps (tube or solidstate). I could be wrong but I feel the input on my pods might be better than the inputs on my soundcard for my guitar...again I stress might. Isuppose an interesting test might be to play wiyh my blue tube pre-amp in various stages of my signal chain. True it only has one tube, so the true tube clipping won't be there...but it might react more "naturally". It is stereo or two mono channels so I can place it several places.

I did try my Marshall tube pre through my pod xt live using it's cab emulation. It was okay, but noisy...

one other thing Greg, you should have Sascha explain the latency thing to you....I think he has a realistic perspective on it, and I think that latency is an issue (or was until gearbox)

i heard it said gearbox with toneport has a 10ms latency in the review from the latest em. thats completely unacceptable.

I thought gearbox said it had a direct monitor? I run the analogs into my soundcard from my pod xt live but I don't record it (well I did on Azimuth), I record the usb. That way I can make use of the direct monitor on my soundcard and latency is not an issue at all..;)

the direct monitor still has latency, according to EM.
It needs to run into your pc, get processes and then come back out. There is bound to be a degree of latency no matter what.
remember, toneport is basically a dongle with inputs.

that's not direct monitor then, but I was talking about gear box not toneport...but it probably is the same, I knew it was too good to be true

Not even close.

I'd even pay serious money for one if I could find it. So far, I think Helian free amp sounds best.

Please prove me wrong.
Depends what sort of sound you're after, but check out the TC Thirty on Powercore...sounds f**king amazing (i think anyway)
