The issue is not how it sounds to your ears but how it sounds on tape.

You have to record it with a good mic(or not so good) on a adequate room, have good wiruing and consoles, apply dynamics, EQ the track et all.

Maybe you havent seen all I said but I have good mics, a good room and I undertand how to make my guitar sound like I want on tape.. I understand not eveyone does, but I do, I play in bands and wouldn't ever think of having anything but real amps, Ihave said it before and I'll say it again it is NOT hard to mic an amp, I really can't overstate that. I can mic my little 10 inch practice amp and get some real convincing tones with huge low end if desired, I was just being a sort of smart ass that I played a JTM 45 and liked it considering its fairly old school and it sounded great. I played it thru a FULL stack and I was testing out this guys new cabinets (its a cab maker I know) and this was the amp he had and it was very classic rock and bluesy and thats how I played and he even said "now that sounds GOOD!!" And by damn it did. ANd it really was better than any sim, now your logic is "well it may not sound like that on tape?" UH yeah maybe if you just throw a mic up there without finidng the sound, but I know that if it sounds GOOD to my ears, than its just a matter of time and a little skill/patience to get it to sound GOOD on tape.. Thats what I dig, thats how I like to do it..

Precisely my point... if you gave me a mic and a amp and everything else, i wouldn't know what to do.
However i get, IMO, a sound i like from software amp sims.
I must say that the I\0 plays a crucial role, it isn't the same playing thru the Hi-z input of a fireface or a studio grade DI box as it is thru a not so good line level input.

I remember looking at numerous opinions on guitars and amps on "harmony central" a few years ago.
and I noticed something strange about opinions on variax, v-amp, and pod, guitar and amp sims :
most of the "it's complete crap!, doesn't come close to the real thing at all" post were from people who were playing guitar from less than 5 years (i saw some people having playing only for 1 year who could flame pod and v-amps ), while "it's really neat, makes my life easier; I played with all type of guitars and amps through my life and this thing comes really close to the real thing" opinions were mostly from people playing and giging since abround 30 years...

ok guys, i've read most of the posts regarding amp emulation software and, i still can't find a definitive answer that i'm looking for so, i'm gonna hit ya with a question while the irons hot here.
I don't have the cash, the room or the right type of people living next door to me to appreciate hardware amps so, i'm after an emulation so, with around £300 in my pocket, what can i buy that'll get me as close as possible to a real tone?

imo POD xt live...I did a half-assed google for uk sites as I'm in th u.s...and seems you can get th xt live for a little more and just the xt for a little less...with the future gearbox coming up to upgrade I feel confident in suggesting you go somewhere and try it out...

Be sure to check out all the free plugins, too. Fretted Synth FreeAmp2, SimulAnalog Guitar Suite, Dirthead...bunch of 'em. Even if you find that they do not produce the type of tone you are looking for they would still be useful for layering, etc.

Get decent distortion pedal, like an MXR, for around $100, then try one or two of the NI amp combos ($79) to get that nice mic'd effect...the AC30 emulation is shockingly good, IMO...

The Jazz Chorus is the most famous solidstate amp of all time. It's about the only transistor amp that doesn't even attempt to mimick a tube amp. Great clean, fine chorus. Not a tube amp, though.
