Any real GM instant-load modules?

There are several Roland Sound Canvas and other GM players that can play the entire GM set without having to load multi-MB files to do so. Roland's Virtual Sound Canvas, Edirol's HyperCanvas may also d this, but neither one will install. Is there any such animal out there (unsupported or not) that can have even fairly cheesy patches available for right-now selection? I mainly want the sound FX for instant response to stage dialog (the equivalent of the drummer's ba-dum-ching...)

Having looked, the closest I can find is M-Audio's Key Rig. Anybody tried this?

I am an entertainer, also, just starting to investigate the software approach. I would like to lean heavier on my receptor, and less on my aging KN7000.

As we both know, solo instruments are no problem. The two area's of conscern are midi files as backing tracks, and styles.

Receptor has SFZ built in. SGM180 is a great sounding GM sampleset: http://www.geocities.jp/shansoundfont/

The only thing missing is a sequencer that receptor will accept. I am looking at Phrazor for that.

You are more adept with software, and maybe you can suggest something for me.

BTW, I saw a comparison poll on Hypercanvas,Key Rig, and SGM180. SGM180 won out for quality of sounds.

sfz looks like a PIA to use. I no longer play midi files live, too many ways they can screw up. I use an iPod, though I was hoping to put the files on Receptor. I used mp3player, but the first time I send a note to change song, it reloaded the multi. May have been the command, I was setting up my Axiom 61 transport keys to do this.

But All I want really is n instant-patch-change funtion for short, GM-quality samples (it's mostly for sound effects and an occasional instrument for non-critical sound, but it would be nice if there were a real app as well

Receptor won't do inter-plug midi, but it can play the audio file, so your solution might be mp3 files.

I actually am getting more into CD+G's for vocals. Aside from break music, how could I use MP3"s ? I heard track erasors are hit and miss. I am very particular about sound quality, and would like to get away from midi's, except I have many good ones, and they are so easy to edit.

Convert 'em to mp3s, reasonabl bandwidth, they'll be fine on stage. PA speakers are NOT high fidelity, and nuance is lost. The primary benefit of midis IMHO is youo can change tempo or key easily. But the sound quality is always what you can coax from your current set of horses, with a mixed audio file, all your fx and modules can be used repeatedly as need be.
