It's just that nowadays many DJ's seem to have forgotten that, for the most part, they're only people that play other people's music, to entertain a crowd. I'm against the whole "DJ as a rockstar" thing, and I'm a purist in the sense that, to me, the music is still what makes the party.
So So true

But don't get me started on this cause I can rant on this for hours. :P

Forget it man, we're not helping the OP.

And anyway, I have a lot of respect for people who DJ with the traditional tools but also keeps his mind open enough to use the new technologies, like you seem to do. So ther eyou go and thanks for the interest in my stuff. :)

I know for the most part it's all to do with the music, but you'd easily change your mind if you heard a good norman cook/dave clarke/kid koala/paul oakenfold/slam/Mr.C etc etc set.

There have been a number of times i've went and playlisted a set i've heard with the individual tracks, and rest assured, it's nowhere near as exciting as having the records well mixed. A lot of dj's are bland and basically just beatmatch and fade, that's very poor and truly just about anyone could do that, but to seamlessly segue totally contrasting tracks, throwing in samples and beats of your own and knowing how to build build build a set is an art in itself afaic.

And that's exactly where Live can help a DJ go beyond the traditional "beatmatch and fade",in so many ways. That is in fact, for me, the main point of this debate.

Transitions... rings any bells?

Poor Richie he's been doing it for soooo long.

Anyway, first and foremost I love my turntables but the whole computer based mixing is very interesting I may add. Personally never got into CDs but computer mixing with Live or Acid or anything else is a very interested concept. You can get tons of music and use tons of effects to mangle beats around. In conjunction with a nice MIDI controller you can create a nice living hell, manipulating beats till they get something completely new.

To conclude by me its not the tools that define if someone is a good DJ or not. Q-Bert manages to rock the crowd pretty well with just the trusted wheels of steel and Richie Hawtin manages to entertain the crowd too using every possible DJ weapon available.

Two completely different approaches, same result, a happy crowd.

This is why for me DJ'ing is such a rush.

I have been spinning tunes since 1981 and I have seen DJ technology move enormous amounts since then as you can imagine.

I am really keen to move my sets forward in terms of adding effects looping etc. but have been always restricted in recent years as you are as a DJ restricted to what the pub\club provide in terms of equipment so the idea of taking a laptop which can do say what Ableton can do in to the venue plugging it in and playing almost a completly different sounding set is appealing.

However, because I do not adhere to a single music policy as a DJ my only worry would be that I could given the comments made here get lost in the technolgy whilst playing and forget what, as a multi genre DJ, I should be dooing which is watching the crowd.

Discuss.
