Eh? That's simple pitch modulation of the clap sample itself. Every time the clap hits it plays at a slightly different sample rate. Very common to make things a bit interesting. I do this all the time in FL Studio, on most of my drums. Makes a loop interesting to have tiny variations.

EDIT: Ok, I NOW hear what you mean. There is a very subtle kind of ambience there. Could be a faint chorus that modulates. It is though quite subtle.

EDIT2: The first clap has a tiny "squeak" thing going on. Like a heavy pitch modulation of the surrounding ambience. Hmm.. interesting question, what could do this? It does seem to be a bit random.. kind of. Try a combination of haas effect, (a simple opposite side delayed signal of less than 30ms) with a modulation delay and together with some slight flanger or chorus (keep the wet level very low).

If I listen exactly to the clap sample, it does not change in pitch itself....
It is just an effect in front or behind the ER pattern of a reverb...., maybe it isn't a reverb thing at all...

It is not an insert fx( 100%), it seems to be a send fx.

Maybe a pitch shifter with only 20% wet that randomly shifts the pitch slowly up and down.

But this could be any effect maybe chorus, flanger, etc....

The thing is: I have it on so many CDs, i don't think it is a specal producer trick. It may be a preset from one of the well known units...
But which one....?

Post

.. or it CAN actually be the sample itself. A stereo sample of some clap that is sampled off a record or something. Especially if you hear it in many places. Heck, it might even be a sample in one of the rompler drum boxes.

I don't know. To me it does sound like the sample itself is shifting pitch too and then there is the stereo, slight chorus/flanger/pitch modulated delay haas effect. I can't listen objectively to it any more as I'm too stoned right now.. :P

Cheers!

thank you anyway...

I am not sure but I think I got it....

It seems to be the dry clap with send level lets say at 30%

This goes to a pitch shifter that does change in pitch slightly and that is reverberated at a small amount.

So I'll try this with an pitch shifter vst soon....

have to search for a good pitch shifter.....with realtime capabilites and modulation , ....
:(
okay the pitch shifter trick did not work at all..

You can try with waves doubler.

Tried it and this is it!!!

Its a doubler effect with reverb that makes it sound real....

I come pretty close to this now....

Does a PCM80/PCM91 do doubler effects?
Which extern hardware does good doubler and reverb?

Post

okay, the trick seems to be a combination of doubler and Reverb, ER-Ambiance

Here is my test files:

another orignial Clap file from professional mastered CD
http://home.arcor.de/soundspace1/reverb ... tioned.wma

And here the sound I did with just a clap sample and the doubler FX (okay it has another tempo):
http://home.arcor.de/soundspace1/reverb ... oubler.wma

now only reverb
http://home.arcor.de/soundspace1/reverb/only_reverb.wma

and now both together as send fx...
http://home.arcor.de/soundspace1/reverb ... oubler.wma

of course the original one is more wet.
but the moving is there and the claps are alive.

What do you think?

I have read somewhere that Roland SRV330 Space Simulator does shift its early reflections to generate 3D positioning...

maybe its just that unit...

It's just a real 909. The clap sound does change because of the digital noise generator which produces random noise, changing all the time. Thus every clap sounds different.

And I hear some compression artefacts adding subtle flanging ;-)

The Waves doubler is a great plugin, actually...
Oh yes, the SRV3030 (not sure about the 330) definitely has RSS...

I think you guys are over analyzing this, I can hear two reverbs on the clap and some kind of delay, but it may be that the clap is sampled via a mic in a room from an amplifier of some sort, it sounds kinda grainy and "amplified" and from there comes the room and then a cheap stereo reverb and delay combo on the clap itself...reminds me of a lil' fx box I had, don't rememer it's name but it was creamcoloured and had a reverb and delay processors - cheap as hell.

thing is, the clip is so badly produced that any "good" reverb is prolly a strike of luck, anyone owning expensive, high-end gear wouldn't produce a track this bad.

good or bad, high-end or not, doesn't matter, just like the sound.

I just like the move in this thing and that air between the clap and the speaker....

I don't think the reverb on this thing is a cheap one as it is very smooth and dense...

Your idea with a real speaker in a room and a mic placed behind it seems to be an interesting thing...
But my neighbours wouldn't allow this kind of real-fx....
:):):)

And yes it sounds "amplified" to me too...

What FX does make a sound feel like played with 3000Watt power speakers and than recorded again....

I mean you can play a clap with a small radio in a hall and it will sound much different as if you play it through large speakers in the same hall at very high volume.
All guitar FX destroys the sound too much...
I would call it "Distortion compressor"

do you have any SRV unit? could probably do an demo 3D effect from RSS to show what it can do....

Post

Yes, I have an SRV3030D...
The RSS effect can range from a naff phasey mess to quite convincing, but it's very dependent on the listening environment...

Anytime. That doubler is pretty nice. you can get some fantastic results. I use it on 909 clap and rides all the time. It is good on vocal too. depend on what are you doing of course.

Cheers...
