BUG REPORT:

On the Mod Matrix there are 4 parameters. 2 with target on left, 2 with target on right. The 2 with the target on right do not seem to be working, while the other 2 do.

edit: it is working fine, it was user stupidity... :)

hmm, can't confirm that.
you know that the order of the knobs is "modulation - via" for all 4 slots?

I have now used the lates beta of the
Zebra2 over one weekend. I'm not
any synth expert (far from that)but pretty much an average semi-pro producer whos uses
different virtual instruments and plugins.

My first experience of Zebra can be condenced: very nice sounding but very unstable.

I don't know if there are some presets or what generates time to time the phenomenon where my PC overloads and sometimes freezes or gets crazy (makes an awful loud sound).

And of course one major challenge is
that I haven't learned to use several
Z's feature, such as arpegiator - I needed
a good manual for these ...

Maybe this all has said before, but
in any case you can add these to the
"user log".

Hope u-he has the energy to complete
this wonderful instrument.

My DAW is PC P4, dual drive, 1 GB RAM,
Win XP pro, Logic 5.5.1, Delta1010,
USB Midisport, Powercore, Waves, Spectrasonics etc.

I installed the Aug 3rd beta and as lovely as it sounds, zebra does seem to have a tendency to run cpu way way up on my system
(P4 2.4 gHz)
pretty predictably on 5 and 6 note chords I can see 60-80% on a single instance
maybe this is just the way it is with highly skilled amateur sound designers and/or what's all going on re: processing
maybe it's some kind of denormalization since this is a P4 system

but I have no other synth that runs up like this
(well maybe rhino on Tim Conrardy's early algorithmic presets)
and I've got a lot
sadly, this would definitely discourage me from using Zebra
despite the incredible richness of its sound

Can you send me the offending patch(es)? - It may be something like denormalization that I have overseen. I'd love to analyse that and find a fix if possible.

Is this working? I tried with no success ...

Yeah, looks like it isn't working as I had hoped it would. I'll see what I can do when I'm diving into installers...

here's a list of some presets that run my P4 2.4gHz up over 60% with a 3 to 6 note chord on a single instance of Zebra

Signature Preview
biolabs
just about any RYM preset
Factory Preview
Pads Evolving
tas ancient asia
tas neon lights
Ambient Textures
tas exo planet
Leads Ambient
tas tangerine storm
Keyboards
lucI Eightissimo

well the indentation disappeared but you get the idea

Thanks wrench,

I'll check them out for possible similarities that may exhibit denormals etc.

However, as far as I can see at first glance these patches are among the exceptionally complex anyway... which admittedly *does* put Z2 into cpu hog mode, no matter what...

Later,

;) Urs

yes I recognise some of these as being uber-complex patches in which case you would expect high CPU. In general I find Z2 excellent on CPU

D'oh... oh...

Hmm, the whole logic was added for only one host (I think it was ACID, not sure). I'll check if I can make it so intelligent that it uses whatever playback start/stop detection suits the host best....
hey man, I should mention that when moving locator position I also get a CPU spike that hits around 40 % higher than what the synth is using. I am currently trying out Zebra2 in the context of a track, there are 7 Zebras so far and this problem unfortunately now causes my CPU to move into the red when I move locator position and thus I'm getting a huge amount of dropouts and crazy CPU shit going on :D

If you could disable this behaviour in a version, I can double check if the CPU spike is also removed too. :)

I'll show ya the track when I get a little more into it too!

Cheers

hey Urs, have you noticed this behaviour I have described? Is there a reason why I would see a CPU spike when moving the locator in my project ? Unfortunately this is a bit of a show stopper in Cubase, moving anywhere in the project when using a few Zebras causes a lot of dropouts, then hitting play causes dropouts for a few seconds and I must wait until the song gets back into a stable state before turning up my speakers.

Track sounds like this btw :D

Only Zebra2 used for synths.

Cheers man

Hey Fots,

I think I'm gonna have a fix for you. I'll make the playback detection more intelligent so that it uses the current behaviour only on hosts that don't send me the right messages. So it should work without wrong assumptions on 95% of all hosts...

Wrench, I've benchmarked/profiled the patches and came to an interesting result. The problem herein is the frequency splitting algorithm that's for instance in the Shaper modules. It's usually a pretty fast thing, but in these cases it has to be calculated in 64Bit double precision. And this takes loooong on Intel cpus. I will try to find a faster replacement for that...

Cheers,

;) Urs

Alternatively just give up on that outdated Windows platform. Give the Mac users something gloat over in the process.

Victor.
