Hi, can someone tell me how to make this_cymbal_crash? (I apologise if you don't have a popup blocker, as it is a free host).

Also, there's a kick playing at the same time (which I didn't EQ out, coz I want you to be able to hear it with as little editting as possible). I have tried compression & timestretching but haven't come close to this sound, thus would be very greatful for any tips for making it. Many thanks

I'm no expert but that sounds like a standard Amen sample.

Sounds like a compressed, truncated open hihat sample to me, or it could be a crash I guess...

Cheers for the info, I will be looking at some of those Amen samples this weekend! Still, it would be better if I knew how they were made in the 1st place so I could have a stab at making them myself..

Thanks beej, I'm new to drum editting so your comment is very helpful. I tried compressing (& EQ cutting) a open hi-hat just now, and came closer than I was before (still quite off, but there's hope!) So thanks again. Any other tips on this, or on drum sample editting & compression would be most welcome too! (I also recommend DOA for those who want tips on drum editting especially DnB)

sounds like a sample of a cymbal/hat being struck simultaneously with either a bassdrum or tom drum. And yes, it sounds compressed, reverberated, and gated.

Yep. It's a portion from the Amen breakbeat, from the song "Amen, Brother" by The Winstons.

You can hear it right at the very end of the sample.

How they created those original sounds - which mics were used, compression, eq settings, etc, etc - has puzzled people for years, so good luck with figuring it out :)

Cheers dblue :) I've been doing a lot of research on the Amen break since the 1st reply, and it's amazing to know the history of it. I first began enjoying DnB in the early 90s listening to Kool FM & WeekEnd Rush, and all my favourite tracks have this break in it!

Thanks for wishing me luck..I'm gona need it!

over-long and slow commentary, but interesting info in this doco about the amen break :

the kick has a lot to do with the amen crash. The entire amen break is heavily compressed and the kick being compressed into it creates a lot of the character.

Cheers for the info - I saw it yesterday & find it interesting, especially the bit when it played the original loop (speeded up) & zero-g's 'version' back to back :)

Thanks 4 the info - I'll bear that in mind when I'm doing the drum editting/sound design thang :)

I'd say smash it with something from the friendly CAMEL people :
just work with the compression stuff, not too much on the distortion knob ...

Cheers, already have PhatSpace (& Cameleon5000 btw) I will be using BP EQ & compression for the drum sound design, but am still learning what's best. So far I've had mixed results with adding distortion, which you've already pointed out that I shouldn't use too much of :)
