the reason my compressor seems to distort easy is that it gives you about ten times as much compression range as others out there, and doesnt apply any rediculous filtering. it is the same as an average insert compressor, actually it is exactly the same as this: http://xhip.cjb.net/temp/public/tinycompressor.png

i think those 'opto compressors' are pussy compressors :P

of course, it is highly subjective i suppose. try not using extreme ranges on the compressor i made and you might notice a difference though (more than 1/40 is extreme)

also, it is a compressor. plain and simple. just like my gate effect, it is a gate, plain and simple. no 'magic' going on in the background, just one simple action using one simple method. if you look at it that way without expecting every control configuration to sound 'magic' somehow (as if the controls are added just to impress you and actually do almost nothing, like in most compressors) it becomes more understandable. to my knowledge, no basic 'real' compressor like the one i quickly wrote exists anywhere else in software.

i really didnt want to bother saying that, i really dont mind if nobody other than myself gets any use out of it, but i think you dont know how to use it since you're too used to other so called 'compressors' in software.

Dunno, to me it sounds quite bad at nearly all settings. Probably it would work ok as insert to tame dynamics but to me a good compressor is so much more than just an utilitarian tool.

I usually get a quite good feel for what a compressor can do and what the inherent sounds of it is by trying it on a few basic things: Drums, percussion, piano, vocal and a full mix. I couldn't get yours to "enhance" any of my test files. Usually a bad sign.

I'm sure this is the case. Or then maybe the case is that you look at a compressor as a tool? I look at it as an effect. There's a slight difference there.

c03 is so marquis it's not even funny.

Unless I'm wrong that is.

T1 mode, so punchy, I love it.

If you don't like the way it plays with the dynamics (I love it), set the detector to "classic" mode. It'll sound more like every other compressor.

C01 and 08 are great too, I'd love to know what those are.

It's kinda funny, I'm the only one who likes c03 the best, everyone else is either indifferent or hates it.

And I was thinking of changing my sig too.

Maybe this has already been mentioned, but it would've been nice to have included some popular freebies like Blockfish, classic comp, stardust, or whatever else.

It IS a volume thing. Psychologically, louder music is percieved as better, which is why when comparing speakers (like in a review of studio monitors) they have to use microphones to detect the overall volume average of each at the listening position, and then have an engineer adjust the volume quickly, before the lister "forgets" what they just heard.

This can be accomplished quickly if tracks are played using mutlimedia software that can detect audio-in levels, and instantly make adjustments to the volume of the output to keep it at a steady level.

This is also why monitors must be the same distance from the listener to allow a unbiased review; Preferably behind an acousticallly transparent screen, or with blindfolded listener(s)!

This could be compensated for in the 10 demo tracks, by chaining a gain plugin or boosting the "output dB" or equivalent parameter, in each compression plugin's GUI.

Well, at least the demo files could (no, should!) be brought up close to 0dB during the original mixdown. As is, "neutral" comparisons are quite impossible, the max. level differences are just incredibly high.
