I would'nt really say I have a favourite, different filters are useful in different contexts. Despite saying this I would say that Fabfilter Volcano, Nitro, FilterScape, Minion and Antares filter get used a lot on the software side, and Moogerfooger Access Virus (external input),and E6400 on the hardware side.

FLEXOR! :D
and Volcano.

Hrm, my favorite filter ... well, I gotta say, the Melitta filters are pretty good although expensive, but if you can't get them most of the no-name brand coffee filters will work fine also. Depends on the coffee, if the coffee sucks, the filters wont do much better either.

:hihi:

I KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT FILTERS!

That being said, the best filters I've heard are the ones in the Triangle and Triangle 2 VST soft-synths by rgcAudio.

But I'd like to know: What features and qualities should be considered prefereable in a filter?

Post

boy, that's a loaded question.
People have very different tastes. Here's a couple of things for starters:
bad filters create a "zipper" sound when they are swept, a high-pitched, incremental artefact instead of a smooth, continuaous change of frequency.
Some filters have a similar aliasing where a weird, off tune harmonic peaks out occaisionally.
Beyond that it seems even mroe subjective: Volcano has 5(?) different "sounding" filters to choose from. The demo might clarify things?

A couple of Buzzmachines - Zephod's and others

Obertone, now Tone2 Filterbank, is king

Basement Arts' new mini is pretty sweet...looking to buy soon

Frohmage for the super fine settings and the delay thingee. A very delicate f**ker-upper

Macomate - biggest most versatile comb filter I've ever seen. *EXCELLENT* if you learn to use it. It's really quite amazing.

Bugpass - gotta love that steep (48db?) chop

DtBlkFx - spectralisization station 2000

Now... can someone recommend me a great filter with an envelope follower? I have a couple of free ones but nothing is really taking me where I want to go. I'm also trying the MIDI route with some of my existing filters but any input would be much appreciated.
