Color Schemes

I hope that in the future Mackie improves the way we do the color scheme design. I would love a simple "always on top" window color manager, with a anywhere picker, and when we click the picker and click an element of the gui, that is selected in the list... It's really a pain in the bum as it stands, especially with no custom palette slots (basic color management!) or even the ability to paste/copy one color slot to another etc.

I considered just editing the XML file but quickly gave up on that due to the goofy names used in the XML file. It'd be nice to even use the default OS color palette for instead of a JUCE manager which is more limited in it's current state. Ya know?

I'm sure YOU know pHz and I gotta bet that you are the one who should be most in tune with this process and concur with what i'm saying. It's cumbersome and I give you tons of credit for making so many awesome schemes. You either are a sadist or just really love doing it :)

I wanted to hang myself halfway through :)

cant argue with any of that ... not sure how high up the priority list improving the colour editor is for mackie though (i always kind of thought it was thrown in there fairly quickly as a bit of a sop to those of us who moaned for so long about disliking the T1 colour scheme and asking for a colour editor) ...

... and yeah ... my first few schemes were painful but once you get to know which GUI element is which its not so bad ... takes me about 1/2 hour now to get the initial settings done (tweaking and finalising is another matter though) ... a couple of simple tips ...

> dont run T2 maximised ... i resize it so i can see both the colour editor and the main GUI when mapping schemes out ...

> every so often switch between tabs since sometimes changes dont update correctly until you do so (the edit tab filter icons are a bitch for this) ...

> i use this - http://www.pkworld.de - to grab colours when needed ...

... ive always thought the most 'tracktion' way of doing it would be to have a toggle in the user interface settings tab that switches on 'colourscheme mode' where the tabs switch pages as usual but no other GUI elements work and when you click on a part of the GUI it highlights and a dialogue opens where you choose colour / alpha for that (and all linked elements) ... so you get a click > choose ... click > choose workflow ... easy and fast and you could see immediately the changes you make ...

That's a clever way to do it. Does Mackie know about it?

Post

hmmmnnn ... dunno ... i have a vague memory of something similar being proposed ages ago by someone (might even have been me) ...

... you know ... if i was a betatester or something id have a direct line to mackie to be able to suggest stuff like this ... bugger ...

If it would just jump to the correct color listing whenever you click on any gui item...

Post

even that would help yeah (but would need to be linked to the ability to keep the colour editor 'always on top' as grymmjack said) ...

... anyways ... another little tweak for legibility of some value boxes if anyone but me is bothered ...

I always liked Logic's look for being very easy on the eyes and the easy perception of important elements.
So i played around for the first time ever a bit with the color-editor yesterday and after several hours using it today i can say, that it works well. But it's not a full conversion - only the arrange-view.

Some really good stuff here. I just recently have been getting into the colour editor and made a couple of skins I'm pleased with and could share. No website yet though, so I'll need someplace to upload them.

Before I do, can anyone comment on whether the same skins will still work in T3, or will the editor change? Cheers

Post

judging by the T3 screenshots there are obviously new GUI elements and effects to consider - but i would guess that T2 skins might be loadable but wouldnt necessarily look the same as they would in T2 without a little tweaking

Cheers Rob. Perhaps I'd best wait then before uploading any.
