I made a plug for my FSU-loving friends.
I wanted to give back something to my community that's provided me with endless audio riches!

Dirty Sanchez VST - thanks to opia for hosting it!
Thanks to vurt for mirroring it for me ;)

It's an FSU VST plug-in. Results vary from storms of white noise, self-oscillating autowah delays, chaotic flanging, to chiming fractalistic comb filters. Sounds cool? Not really; it mostly makes horrendous noise. Therefore there's a preset bank provided.
  • Zero-Crossing detector modulates the delay time.

Envelope Follower modulates the Delay Feedback and the VCF's Frequency

ADSR and LFO modulate the VCF's Q parameter, with a control to control the amount of moulation for each and an attenuation knob for the mix thereof.

Stereo input is split into 2 separate mono flowpaths to up to 1000 ms of delay then into 2 VCFs then are remixed into stereo before the output.

Thus you get a VCFiltered delay, the echoes of which are modulated by the audio's amplitude and zero-crossing rate (the complexity of the sound greatly increases the modulation amount).
Aside from the idea behind the bastard it is very hard to control. Presets are provided because patch programming is inscrutable.

CAUTION: I am not a coder! It could potentially blow your speakers to smithereens! There is no control for wet/dry level, there is no volume control. The actual effects created are very, very sensitive to volume so experiment with the input volume, starting off LOW.

The internal volume of the plug-in is uncontrolled and may cause the plug-in to shortcircuit and not respond until you stop your DAW (which hopefully sends it a midi-off message like FL does) and then you can get it to work again by setting the input volume lower and pressing play again.

I strongly recommend putting a hard limiter both before and after the plug.

I haven't the slightest idea how to get the plug to autoload a default bank of presets so you've got to load the bank I made manually. An .fxb is provided in the archive.

This plug-in is not optimised in any way.
There is no GUI. Hopefully your host has a default one.

This plug-in is freeware. You can do anything you want with it, pass it on to anyone. If someone wants to host it somewhere that'd be great.

Make some sounds with it and send me a link to hear it.
I'd particularly appreciate any presets you come up with.

I am not a Dev so there's no support and there'll be no updates. Please, please don't blow your speakers to pices with this plug-in.

I'll post some mp3 demos eventually.

I made these same comments when I began sharing my early Reaktor works until someone told me they almost ruined their hearing using one of them. Because I have tonitus, I have no desire to see that affected on someone else due to my sharing something I turned out in good faith.

All you need to do to rectify this(AND protect people's speakers) is place a peak/hard limiter component/macro/container, etc at the end of your plugin's outputs set to 0db. You don't need to code it yourself(I didn't code mine; it's in Reaktor's factory library), and if you don't have one handy, all you need to do is ask another person who works in the same enviornment as you do to provide you with one and you need not ever worry. Here at KVR that's a 5 minute thread.

I'm not saying any of this to criticize you, I'm just trying to spare you from feeling like shit if someone else isn't responsible or knowledgeable enough to place a limiter after potentially dangerous plugins and reaps the results, especially an adolescent browsing the forum who only sees 'free plugin' as they're wont to do, and download it without reading the details.

Speakers are replaceable; ears are not.

Congrats on joining the builder's community.

couldn't download the file, just got a 4kb with nothing in it.
Could you upload it somewhere else? thanks

I tested the link before I posted this and I tested it just now.

Works fine as far as I can tell and I'd post it elsewhere except for Sickle's advice gives me pause.

Be back momentarily.

I've had the demo to this for a long time, came across it today in my stuff, checked on the creator's site and it's gone the way of all things. No more plug-in constructor.

So I thought, "Well, I want a sound like in waiting man's songs I'll just make it."

Perhaps I can nest it inside of a SynthEdit plug - I don't recall the procedure of embedding VSTs inside an SE VST being particularly complicated.

Any advice is welcome. Don't want to blow someone's ears out! Though, realistically, this thing's internal volume strangeness is such is that it cuts out at high, but not ear-damaging-high, volumes automatically. And, really, all the time if twiddle knobs.

Can you try the thing out and let me know what you think, Sickle?
I've got some friggin' loud 70's KLH speakers but I've no idea if they're representative of volume levels elsewhere.

lost tech does not have a limiter built in, nor do tons of other ridiculous FSU plugs like daisypusher, jack dark's, and many others as well.

sickle's same criticisms could be applied to many many other fsu plugins, thus, i believe them to be rather irrelevant.

you could bold and italisize "use a limiter maybe", or if you really want, you could do what other fsu devs have not done and put one in. if i were you, i would think, what's the point? i like it loud, i like it distorting, i like it clipping. even irrelevant to my subjective personal preferences is that even if this plugin had a built in limiter, if you are working with fsu chains you're going to need one on your master output anyways. and i'm pretty sure anybody working with any type of fsu effect chain *will* be using a master output limiter, seeing as not many fsu vsts have built in ones.

i do think a wet/dry would be nice, and probably not that hard to code, but i'm not really complaining..

edit: i mean, don't get me wrong, sickle has a very valid point of needing to use a limiter, and his statements are justified , however it just seemed a bit illogical due to my afforementioned points, which i believe were failed to take into consideration, in the context of the fact that almost all other fsu plugs have the same warning of 'use a limiter'

now, as for the plugin itsself, i'll post back here in 10-15 minutes after going thru the the presets and randomizing it/slowly morphing parameters to different values, as if someone had 100 hands and a 100 knob midi controller and was on crack, with my psuedorandom fractal max patch.

i can say on my initial 30-60 second impressions that you have found an electron friend in the VST creation world runagate

i expect many more to come, because even without randomizing or integrating this with my input/max setup, it is f**king awesome :) full review soon

Sickle was just offering advice, to spare Runny feeling bad should the event arise. It wasn't really criticism.

But, I couldn't get this thing loud enough to scare me. Most of the time the audio just cut out (like 95% of the time). The problem with the public version of plug-in constructor was that it was still pretty buggy. Too bad they went 404.

Post

on second thought, you may want to include a limiter... why? because synthedit has a very nasty habit of cutting off sounds and forcing you to reload the plugin whenever it gets too loud.. if there was a limiter inside, maybe that wouldnt happen, i'm not sure though.. whenever i was about to get some really interesting sounds the plugin would break :P so i guess i will have to hand tweak it...

anyways, i will post more in a little bit, phone is ringing..

Post

Let me emphasize that there's no way you're going to get useful sounds out of it without either at least starting from the provided .fxb's presets and adjusting or devoing a lengthy time to dinking around with it.

Also, there's no way you're going to get anything other than the sound just cutting out unless you start the input audio quiet and then adjust to the audio content your inputting.

As I say, it's half-assed and I'll post mp3 demos to show why I even bother using it :)

I didn't really expect anyone other than blortblort, dubbyah and PTV and the like to even try it after seeing the paragraphs and paragraphs of caveats.

Post

:-o ...thanks for the warnings, runny....off to give it a whirl presently (all warnings heeded :hihi: )

I try everything. :)

Some fun sounds when I got to work. I just re-initialized it each time the sound cut-out. It strikes me the feedback was the biggest culprit.

Post

Hehe nice one runagate!
I had to put a limiter before it with an out ceiling of -15db in order to stop the sound cut outs.
Some really cool noises there, i like :D

Post

This is quite a nice little plug, runny...it's a bit rough in places (volume cutout's =restart the plug as mentioned earlier...), but definitley NOT unmanageable...and it IS quite sensitive to volume changes in input, so one does need to approach with caution, but 'tis worth it me thinks :hihi:
here's a doodle
(used only one track: Lazysnake (of course! :P ) with a send to DS FSU delay with runagate's "Houyhnhnm Albion" preset(classic master limiters fore and aft and one bionic delay for "spread"...in case anyone is interested, the drumloop is from zero-g "beneath the planet of the breaks" i messed it about some...)

while I did make up some presets of my own...I did it as I went thru runagate...and invariably I'd tweak one...and then the very next one of runny's I'd try would sound like the one I just made...but his were better, of course

might have more time to do presets later, but thanks for this one, Sir! let us know when ya have something else!
