Real guitar amps vs: amp sims???

when I joined the army in 78 I swore I would take my riches and buy a lab series, it had a compressor...I had never heard of it before but it sounded cool...and the amp did too....then I found out what they paid me However i did have a Peavey Classic while in the service, the I sold it to a pawn shop and bought a fender twin...sold that for food

Oh and July 1st I bid my neighbors and taxachusetts farewell once and for all (of course I'll come back to visit) and move to Maine...my closest neighbor will be a moose or a bear, at least that's the plan now....for the first time it's looking pretty likely...then I'll have walls

...I guess that's what I was trying to say in part. But, be it low or high volume I would admit that ampsims won't sound the way a nice tube amp with speakers will. Even if you hook an ampsim up to a transistor power amp and plug that into a speaker cab... then, compare that side by side to a "matching" (in volume) tube amp/speaker combo it just won't sound quite the same.

...Won't have the same nuances of sound, response to a player's playing or volume like tubes do. I guess a lot depends on what kind of a guitar sound you're going for. As mentioned before among the posts here, no real amp-like feedback can be had out of a sims. Players like myself that just need a "medium sized" dose of distortion that won't sound like crap on chords, might find an ampsims just fine for home recording or playing live.

Part of why some choose ampsims is out of necessity as pointed out by some others posting here. Some people just can't crank up a real amp/speaker combo in their home studio without the neighbors complaining or making noise themselves. Some might like carrying a lighter amp/preamp setup as opposed to hauling around say, their vintage Fender or Marshall tube head to a practice or a jam. ...or like me, who can't afford that nice tube amp just yet.

Correction to my last post (if anyone cares); It was Albert King, not Albert Collins who I believe used to use a "refrigerator sized" transistor amp (at least in one photo I saw from the late 60's).

Right, there's still a little bit of a gap between the real thing and a sim, for sure. I think most of us would admit that.
