Just to write or to produce market, sell, etc?
Not including marketing...
Live was developed over several years (est. 1999) with a team of developers all on salary. Then you have a project manager for every 10 developers or so, and some .5 testers for each developer, all on salary. The also pay a configuration manger, and probably a seperate web developer (web is nessicary to track bugs in beta phases). Also I think they pay liceneces for time stretching and MP3 technologies.
That's a lot of money (the average salary for a software engineer in Berlin is > $50,000, and Ableton says they have over 50 developers).

Could it be done cheaper? Yes. Could it be done faster. Yes. Could it be done both? Probably a little now that much of the hard work (Requirements, R&D) has been done by Ableton, but really probably not much faster or much cheaper unless they are a poorly run company and I would never say that about them.Who: Ableton is about fifty software developers, business people and product specialists. The company is run by Gerhard Behles (CEO) and Bernd Roggendorf (CTO), its original founders, and Jan Bohl (COO/CFO). Most Abletons are active in music production, performance or DJing.

Don't forget business overheads, office space, business rates, utilities, tax, marketing costs, manufacturing costs, third-party licenses (the timestretching algorythms are not developd by Ableton, but licensed, I believe, along with some other stuff I'm sure)...
Once you look at the budget sheet, in all I wouldn't be surprised if the to-date costs of developing Live 5 are certainly in the hundreds of thousands, possibly more.
Wow, wonder what that would be like for Logic or Cubase, both of which are about 15 years old now...
