i rename the dll files so they tell me what the plug actually does.
i use following rules:
category_description_originalname.dll

example:
fsu_granular_delay_tb_pudding.dll
dly_randomized_audiosegments_discipline3.dll
pan_4in10out_krosipan.dll

if you got a synthedit plugin rename it before you first start it, so the folder it creates got the same name as your renamed dll

i dont know if this works for every plug, but so far works quite well.

I still use it as a samples database. As for plugins, well, a year has gone by, and nowadays I just keep a handfull of them on my vst folder. Takes hard disciplin, though

A word to the deleters:

Of course it's a goold idea to delete unusable plugins directly, BUT:
Who can remember all the names of the plugins he tried and deleted?!
So it might happen to download or install an old one again, because you forgot you tested it already?!
So a small database (not Access) would be a good idea.

Given the cheapness of CDRs what I do when my plugin folder gets bloated is back them all up on a CD and do a serious culling of the weak. I'm a packrat though and can't even get rid of virtual devices.

haha i hear ya, my folder is growing and growing. i cant stop, its horrible.
i think the best is to think if one hasnt already got such a sound. if so delete the thing immediately. what is a bit hard if one utilized already a certain sound of it in a song

Pretty sure Open Office has an Access type database alternative. Not only open source but also non-Micro$oft! Yea!

OMG, I forgot I started this thread!

Interesting stuff...I don't recall alpha-testing mandolarin's database program though...and you gotta love the guy who suggested Notepad! I still get a kick out of that...

I'm still using SampleCatalog occasionally. My collection has shrunk quite a bit as I seem to be settling down with some favourite, quality plug-ins for production, removing (to backup folders, in case I need later) the plug-ins I don't or seldom use.

I'm using notepad for this

Seriously - "codes.txt" contains names, download links, user/password pairs, serial numbers, and additional necessary information. And it is backed up frequently (I don't delete e-mails containing reg codes etc until it's backed up).

All Plugins listed, sortable by name or type, each plugin can be rated, list can be filtered.
What else than the rating should I implement?

anyone use databases for good/bad VST?
