I tried to compile a list with comments in MS Word, but it seems kinda messy and awkward - is there a database-style program that would be better suited to this? HTML?
Just curious, it's becoming a jungle in c:\program files\steinberg\vstplugins.
anyone use databases for good/bad VST?

Just wondering how other VST addicts keep track of what's good and what's not. I've got well over 300 vst plugins in my folder now, and even though I tend to delete stuff I don't like, it's hard to keep track of what you thought sounded good and why, etc. And I'm trying/adding plug-ins almost daily!

Heheh... Why not write a review of each, and dump it here at KVR?? Then you can compare notes with other's

1) open up host
2) make it able to load every VST you own
3) One by one, open up an instrument and play with it. Keep it if it is worthy. Delete it if it is not.

forget cataloging and rating them ... just be ruthless and get deleting ... its hard but a useful skill to acquire and develop ...
(not saying im any good at it but im down to about 15 synths / samplers total (including 5 or 6 drum machines) and just 2 or 3 effects plugins in each of my self-imposed categories)

The least you should do is create subdirectories under vstplugins, e.g. synths, instruments, effects, mastering, or maybe just Voxengo, Kjaerhus, Linplug, ConcreteFX, other ... I use a two level directory structure, but also, as Chase says, delete stuff that I don't want. Some things you can even sell again

Thanks for the fast responses guys. Not to seem ungrateful, but all these things are exactly what I do. Delete what I don't like, make subdirectories (actually, I make sub-subdirectories, like FREE PLUGINS/SYNTHS/BRAND NAMES/INST. I'm just picturing some kind of program where I could view the folder structure or hierarchy/labels and see personal comments like, "this inst is great for sound-designer style pads", or "good delay, but no host-sync", for example. I've never used database programs per se, so just wondering if anything like that has been tried.

It's realy fantastic! You actually can open it and write in some notes for things you want to remember ...
And yes, it is also possible to do other things with it, rather than merely doing remarks to several VST plugins!
Pro: It is free (comes with your operating system).
Contra: You need a keyboard to type in the letters and words ...
And yes, maybe, some day, one will write a VST plugin which exactly does that job...
But probably it's much too complex at the moment...

I have reduced my plugin count by about 200 and I am much happier as a result... I say keep 10-15 instruments tops. Then 1-2 each of compressors, modulators, reverbs, distortions, and then mebbe 5-10 special purpose plugs. You will be amazed how much more productive you are

I use this small freeware program called sample catalog. It's designed to be a samples database, but with some imagination and tweaking of the default keywords it works great for instruments and effects.bduffy wrote:
