You done any of that?
Yes, I have. Thanks for asking.
I think someone who was given the position of CGI supervisor on a full-length feature by Universal would be in the 'can' category and just a little bit more clued in than you.
Maybe, if he's been taking as much advice from the Visual Effects Supervisor at WETA Digital as we have. Otherwise, who knows?
You cant do, or teach.
Actually, I do and teach, often in the same week or even on the same day.
...you do training? By-the-numbers, follow-the-dots teaching, without the hard bit of trying to workj out whether people learned anything or not, no doubt.
Why would you think that? Is that how they do things where you work? We're a little more sophisticated than that.
Guess you're in the 'can't do' category yourself, then... but without the benefit of actually having been in the games, film, or animation industries.
Yes, that's right. I'm 48 next month but I've only had a job for the last three and a hlaf years. That makes perfect sense, doesn't it?
BONES, thats the dumbest f**king attempt to turn the facts on their heads that Ive ever seen from you. Its so f**king retarded you should hang yourself in shame.
Actually, it was an opportunity for you to redeem yourself by pointing out something which negates this argument to some extent. I figured your knowledge probably wouldn't give you sufficient insight but I was willing to throw you a bone.
Lets get this straight. You're actually claiming that film pipelines decide on the OS they're going to use first, and then base their choice of modelling and animation application of on that?
Of course they do. Think for a minute how long it takes to set one up, how many machines it involves and the enormous cost of keeping it all running. You don't set up a brand new pipeline for every new job. You set up a pipeline at your facility and you use it for each job that comes through, possibly with a few tweaks here and there. WETA have 4000 render machines, imagine how much money they save on a free OS and how much more they get out of a custom-compiled kernel.
I mean you do know film companies generally dont use the Maya (or MAX) renderer, at all, right? Did you know you dont need to use Maya to render scenes modelled and animated in Maya? Or is MAX that limited that you cant use it with any other renderer?
Let me see, as well as PR Man, the renderer you obviously couldn't remember the name of, and Mental Ray which is now integrated into both Maya and Max [and has been in SoftImage forever], Max can render with Brazil R/S and VRay [very popular] plus a bunch of other, lesser known 3rd party renderers. If you had aclue you would know that one of Max's biggest advantages is its plug-in architecture, something most of the former Alias guys I've talked to seem to be very impressed with.
But you're right, integration with PR Man is another strong reason that Maya gets used in film but more and more that comes down to existing expertise in things like writing shaders than any real advantage in using it anymore. 3DS Max 9 will be a big boost for Mental Ray.
But that's totally distinct from the systems which modellers and artists will use to create scenes, and modellers and animators dont unilaterally work on Linux systems, not by a long chalk; Windows is far more common (presumably because of better support for the highest-end graphics cards, and because support tools like Deep Paint, and Z-brush, and Photoshop are primarily Windows based, as well). There's no interdependency between the use of Linux systems and what gets used to model and animate. At all. The idea is laughable.
OK, you list all the places you know of with a mixed OS pipeline and I'll list all the places I know of with a single OS pipeline and we'll see whose is the longest, shall we?
There's absolutely no need to use Linux-based modelling software just because that's what's used in your rendering pipeline; the whole suggestion is just stupid. If film companies thought MAX was better, they'd frigging use it, and run their pipeline on Windows. But they dont, they use Maya.
Actually, these days more and more big post houses are turning to mixed solutions as they have worked out its often better to get the best artists and let them work with their software of choice than it is to limit your talent pool to a particular application. Shit, even ILM have 3DS Max these days.
They dont invest in their animation pipeline based on the OS they're going to run, and then decide what apps are available after that; thats insane. If you actually wanted to try thinking for three seconds instead of rehashing the same old tired krap, you'd have realised what utter shite you're talking.
Except that I have been there and seen it. I'm not going on what someone else said, or what I think, simply on actual, physical experience. How difficult is it for you to grasp this concept? I have seen these things with my own eyes. I have been paid for my advice during the setting up of post-production pipelines so I have been privvy to the process. I am not extrapolating wildly or pain making any of this up. Its what my professional credibility as an Autodesk Applications Engineer is entirely based on. Its as fundamental to my job as setting up a network is to yours.
Have you ever been involved in setting up an animation pipeline? Do you even know someone who has?
Yes and yes. [See above.]
Its an amateur's mistake, one I'd fully expect from an ignorant c**t like you.
Yup, you're an ignorant c**t and an amatuer all right.
Brilliant riposte!

OK enough, you two. There's only one solution: Make a 3D FL skin in both Maya and Max and we'll see which one makes Baniev happy. That one will clearly be superior.

I think the loser would come out with more credibility. Oh, and I should point out that whyterabbit doesn't actually do this kind of thing for a living, he just thinks he knows more about it than people who do.

So what was your paper on?
Maybe, if he's been taking as much advice from the Visual Effects Supervisor at WETA Digital as we have. Otherwise, who knows?
Well obviously, you dont know. Which is why your assumptions were so laughable.
Actually, I do and teach, often in the same week or even on the same day.
Thus disproving the nonsense you were spouting earlier. No surprise there.
Why would you think that?
Because that's how training companies generally do things. Didnt you know that?
Is that how they do things where you work?
I dont work at a training company. I work for a University. So quite obviously, no. I thought you said you knew what they were like. Clearly not.
Yes, that's right. I'm 48 next month but I've only had a job for the last three and a hlaf years. That makes perfect sense, doesn't it?
Soldier, then burger-flipper, for most of it, wasnt it. Of course, that means you're more than qualified to comment on the ability of other people to teach.

BActually, it was an opportunity for you to redeem yourself by pointing out something which negates this argument to some extent. I figured your knowledge probably wouldn't give you sufficient insight but I was willing to throw you a bone.
Nah, it wasnt. It was just you being a dumbass again.
Of course they do. Think for a minute how long it takes to set one up, how many machines it involves and the enormous cost of keeping it all running.
You don't set up a brand new pipeline for every new job.
Actually, when a friend of mine was working on a project, with Framestore commissioned to render it, that's exactly what Framestore did. They were setting up a new pipeline for that job. The rendering was indeed on Linix. The modelling and animation werent.
You set up a pipeline at your facility and you use it for each job that comes through, possibly with a few tweaks here and there. WETA have 4000 render machines, imagine how much money they save on a free OS and how much more they get out of a custom-compiled kernel.
And its your assertion that WETA needed to save money so much on their hardware that that decreed the choice of animation and modelling software?

Jesus, you get dumber by the pound, dont you.
I had no need to name something specifically, so to yoou that means I couldnt rememember the name of it? Jeez, you just get funnier.
If you had aclue you would know that one of Max's biggest advantages is its plug-in architecture, something most of the former Alias guys I've talked to seem to be very impressed with.
If you had a clue, you'd have realised that that's completely irrelevant to what's being said.

What was it made PIXAR support Maya directly, and provide a solution for working with Renderman directly from Maya, I wonder. Have they done that for MAX?
I guess its because they were using Linux, yeah?
But you're right
That musta hurt.
, integration with PR Man is another strong reason that Maya gets used in film but more and more that comes down to existing expertise in things like writing shaders than any real advantage in using it anymore.
Yeah, right, of course it does. Except if MAX actually was better, these companies would be using that to model and animate, and still use Renderman on the back end.
OK, you list all the places you know of with a mixed OS pipeline and I'll list all the places I know of with a single OS pipeline and we'll see whose is the longest, shall we?
What would that prove? That you would conveniently count a company modelling on Windows as Linux-only because it suited you? You twist the truth trying to prove yourself right enough as it is.
Actually, these days more and more big post houses are turning to mixed solutions as they have worked out its often better to get the best artists and let them work with their software of choice than it is to limit your talent pool to a particular application. Shit, even ILM have 3DS Max these days.
Except of course, they'll all be using Linux, because thats what they're rendering on like what you said earlier.

Or in other words, yes I was right.

Post-production pipelines? Ooopsie, moving the goalposts again. We were talking about animation pipelines here, not post. How difficult is it for you to grasp that concept?

I am not extrapolating wildly or pain making any of this up. Its what my professional credibility as an Autodesk Applications Engineer is entirely based on. Its as fundamental to my job as setting up a network is to yours.
If this is representative of your 'professional credibility' then based on the way you're desparate to sustain your argument by constant misdirection, hypocricy, and bullshit, you've got none, none at all.

And once again, BONES decides to ignore the fact that all through this Ive been referring to the people I know who do this for a living. Animators and modellers in the games, entertainment and film industries.

But if BONES says 'X is better', and I say 'I know plenty of people who do this for a living that dont think X is better' then the fact that I dont do it for a living somehow becomes the focal point. The fact that he doesnt actually do it for a living in those industries either is miraculously irrelevant.

Point of fact, BONES doesnt have a clue what I actually do for a living.

What i hate is when you select skins from the options menu, there's one for "Silent skin" that *should* just point to a 0kb .wav file but it doesn't- it's bigger and has data in it(!!!!). And If you delete this audio file FL looks for it and takes ages to load (it shouldn't bother if it can't find it in the default directory). And the sound it makes on start up... it's practically a f**king 8-bit quality sound! How unprofessional- at least they could put a .wav in the start up that's somewhat *close* to CD quality...

And if you want the red clock, you still have to have the bullshit non-silent start-up; you can't choose both.

it's crap.

I hate that startup sound; it is really hampering my creativity.

so if I get it right, BONES does demos?

so he's like those guys I know who go around doing those amazing Avid demos. The demos they can do but they haven't got the faintest clue about anything else. I guess the 'anything else' part BONES fills in with his enourmous ego.
