Um, thanks?FrettedSynth wrote:@AdmiralQuality - you sure talk a good subject
You could brush up on your reading comprehension yourself. By the way, are you ready to retract your whining about the typo and Strato/Tele stuff that I never said about you yet? Or were you just trying to defend the author of http://www.helpwantedproductions.com/guitsyn.htm in solidarity?
And BTW2, got the release segments going yet? Anything else I can do to help? Need a module programmed?

Yeah I know where you are coming from, having said that midi guitars have their place and are incredibly creative tools.guitarzan wrote:I didn't say MIDI guitar was useless, what I said is MIDI guitar sucks. It does, I know that, almost everyone who has ever used it has been telling you that MIDI guitar sucks. It still gets used, I use it, but the tracking stinks. Only you, who has never palyed MIDI guitar, seems to know better.
"Every breath you take" as played by Andy Summers for example shows (and that was old technology as well as an old song) what can be done in the right hands.
I doubt if the l8 Hendrix would be too impressed using one though, I think latency would be an serious issue

You know aquar, if you stand 10 feet away from your amp, and are 6 feet tall, you have 11.6 ms of latency right there. (At sea level anyway, even worse in Denver!)

That's Denver out then.
I was so looking forward to playing that leg of the tour.

Yes, but who wouldn't want to get a whole mile, high?aquar wrote: rofl

You know what... I was doublechecking that sound does actually travel slower at higher altitudes and wikipedia's entry is stunning me with the statement:
So, just to show I don't know *everything* (or at least I didn't until a second ago) I always thought it was the lower PRESSURE that made the speed of sound slower at altitude?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_of_sound wrote: the speed of sound c depends on temperature only, not on the pressure or density (since these change in lockstep for a given temperature and cancel out). Air is almost an ideal gas. The temperature of the air varies with altitude, giving the following variations in the speed of sound using the standard atmosphere - actual conditions may vary.
But I digress... anyway, my point about latency was, sound travels only about ~1000 feet per second, so every foot you are away from your monitor adds approximately 1 ms of latency. So if you're playing MIDI-guitar in the studio with headphones on (or on stage with an in-ear monitor), you actually get a few ms back compared the the suckers monitoring through the slow, slow air! Jimi included.

Anyway shouldn't you be cracking on with Poly-Ana?
Hows she going?

Using modules in synthedit is much like using libraries in C++. You as programmer should know that. And do YOU know every detail how your external libs work?
Nobody ever called FS the inventor of pitch tracking. I still have the early roland pitch2midi converter (was it 1989?) ... FS just opened the door to vsti world for us guitarists, that was kind and generous. There is plenty of room for improvements and commercial niches
.
You seem to be a quite clever guy, so maybe you have the potential to develop for example a better than naive pitch tracker without delay. Good luck

Sigh. WHAT external libs? Anyway, when I do use them... like to interface with Windows, yes, I know enough that if they didn't already exist I could write them myself. I've been programming for Windows since 1991. Now there's some stuff you just CAN'T know, because Microsoft doesn't tell you... but whatever. As a C programmer, you're as powerful as you want to be. If you don't like the existing OSes, you just take a few years off and write your own kernel, like Linus did.MaxJoy wrote:Using modules in synthedit is much like using libraries in C++. You as programmer should know that. And do YOU know every detail how your external libs work?
EDIT: Furthermore, your analogy is weak because an SE author is stuck having to use black-box modules for EVERYTHING, where a C/C++ programmer only links in a library if they don't need to reinvent that particular wheel. EVERYTHING in the signal path in my products is 100% my own code. I don't even rip stuff out of musicdsp.org -- though I did use two short snippets of code, couple lines long each, one offered by Christian Budde used for my envelope curves, and the other from aciddose, used for not-quite-a-sine-wave generation. Each offered me that code when I asked in the Dev Forum for some suggestions. (Thanks guys!!!!) So I take that back... 99.5% my own code.
What I'm doing is SO different from plugging pre-existing modules together, it astounds me that certain people can't appreciate the difference. I mean, why IS there a music software industry at all anymore? Why don't they fire all the programmers and just have management make everything out of SE, for eternity? Seems to me this would follow logically from the way some of you speak of SE. Great, no software is worth anything anymore! THAT'S going to be good for innovation!
So IF I had nothing to offer, I'd consider plugging in somebody else's module (which wouldn't be as efficient as doing it myself in-line anyway) And yes, I DO use libraries. zlib and pnglib are in there somewhere... because I had no improvements to offer in those areas and they're also not in areas where performance matters. VSTGUI too, though I've modded it to such a point it's not VSTGUI anymore. ANOTHER thing you can't do with SE modules... TWEAK them. I compiled all those above mentioned libs myself. If there was something they did I didn't want, I HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE IT.
In SE you have NOTHING BUT external modules. (Unless you're a programmer and can make your own customer modules. I don't even know, maybe FS even did?
So, bad example.
Sigh. Guitarzan just did:Nobody ever called FS the inventor of pitch tracking.
Does nobody READ these posts I'm reacting to or do you all just knee-jerk at me?Guitarzan wrote:(SE or not, FrettedSynth is the one who came up with this new tracking scheme)
I would say Roland, et al, opened the door by making you guitar->MIDI converters. If FS REALLY wanted to open doors, he'd put a MIDI out on his synths so you could use OTHER VSTis. The only door he opened is the one leading to HIS product (which technically is not a VSTi, it's an effect. But who cares? I know what you mean.) So if you like THAT sound... GREAT! But if you don't, you're S.O.L.I still have the early roland pitch2midi converter (was it 1989?) ... FS just opened the door to vsti world for us guitarists, that was kind and generous. Maybe. We'll see. I doubt I could do better than Roland or the Axon though. I could certainly duplicate FS's method in a few hours though. So if people really LIKE that, you got it. I'll put it in Poly-AnaFX (and then people will complain about the bad accuracy and fussiness of input signal of it's pitch tracking

Obviously, some people really like that. So are you committing to do this, given that it's only a few hours work? When will we see a Poly-AnaFX demo? Will you provide a VST MIDI output? As you note, that's the "killer app" for pitch-to-digital. Jeez, I might even *buy* the thing if it could do that.AdmiralQuality wrote:Maybe. We'll see. Nope would not want anything from a guy like you, even if you could make it work?
See you bub! I'm out of this one.

Where does this come from then? You DID NOT read something about your site that I wrote at ALL. Because I haven't commented on your site (and why would I? WHAT does a website have to do with the product it's hosting? NOTHING!)FrettedSynth wrote:The crap about typo's on my siteHavent touched my site in two years, a nice guy named asseca has hosted and maintained my site for me
now I have to yell at asseca (just kiddin asseca thanks for all you do) TBH if I had made the site it would look awful and have many more typo's
Also read something about me not knowing the difference between a strat and a tele
dude I most likely picked up a strat before you were born?
So WHAT are you talking about? The ONLY typo and Strat/Tele comments I made in this thread were in this post http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... 99#2105399 , which one more time, quoted again in its entirety:
So, again, I ask you, what is your problem regarding spelling and the difference between strats and teles? Do you THINK this whole thread has been about YOU???? Or have you simply chosen to take every comment I make about anything, to be some personal affront? OR... as I suggested previously... is your reading comprehension lacking? To your credit, I'm assuming #2.AdmiralQuality wrote:Sigh, there's no conceptual difference between a pitch driven "virtual control voltage" and "pitch to MIDI".
You've got to stop reading hype as if it was a spec sheet.
And that guitar synth page you keep pointing to: http://www.helpwantedproductions.com/guitsyn.htm is full of errors. You gonna take to heart the words of someone who says "Europeon" and calls a Stratocaster a Telecaster?
(This is the name of my next band!!! "The Euro-Peons"!!!)
Pick one. Either way, you're talking nonsense to someone who's only been trying to help you.

It's certainly a few hours work, but when everything else is done. So I'd say sometime after ver 1.0. Which is realistically still a few month's off.kevink wrote:Obviously, some people really like that. So are you committing to do this, given that it's only a few hours work? You talk about *buy*ing software as if it's some rare exception? Is it really possible to have a completely free DAW software system? Even the other independents I know of insist you [asteriskes yours...] *buy* their software. Albeit at reasonable prices. But at the end of the day, if they (and myself) weren't able to collect SOME revenue from this process... we just couldn't do it. We don't all run other businesses (like FS does) to do this on the side as our hobby. SOME of us are serious about this.
That we talk to you, you shouldn't take as lessening the products we make. Perhaps this is just how we do market research? As I said before, I'm SURE you get better treatment from the president and/or lead engineer (as IF they were the same people!) at Roland or Yamaha or Korg or whoever.
That any of you would put me down for spending time trying to HELP you, and to understand your ISSUES, and then state you wouldn't buy my products because you think you dont' LIKE *ME*? An actual human person???

Yes it's possible nowadays to get a complete free daw. And even more: Everybody with enough love and enthusiasm can assemble his own instruments and effects. You have to face this, sorry.
You're not the only professional who must take this new kind of customer into consideration. When I go to the doctor for example I first do a serious research myself. And I double-check the pills he gives me.
But there will always be a place for fresh new ideas and quality stuff, that's the good news
