now this does not necessarily break the stability of reason - all the vts and audio recording stuff would be the other apps problem, and as long as the rewire thing is tight enough a protocal the data stream should not crash reason

and neither does it break their long held notion that none of these things will be in reason - but this way they kind of will be if you need them

what else can they actually put in the program now to make it better - apart from more fx ? or should i say more attractive to joe punter - because there slow update schedule suggests that they ain't making money from updates
It always cracks me up when people endlessly try to figure out some oblique manner to introduce wanted features into Reason. What they NEED to do, to remain competitive, is to simply introduce Audio Recording/Tracks and the ability to use VSTis. Any of the rhetoric that these features introduce stability problems or that Reason is meant simply to be a soft synth and not a DAW are just pure bullshit. If you don't want to use VSTis, and theoretically risk stability, you wouldn't have to. Having a VSTi "Wrapper" built into the program should not effect stability at all. There excuses are so obviously a load of crap that it amazes me that people give them any credence.

As I have speculated before, I believe that they may bound by a non-competition contract with Steinberg, when they cut ties with them, as a distributor. Hence the introduction of Rewire so that you would be dependent on apps like Cubase (which I believe was the first Rewire Host) for these missing features. Of course I have also been accused of being a "conspiracy theorist" for suggesting such ideas. Yeah, it's such an outlandish idea that companies that have dependent business relations never engage in such contractual agreements. Or perhaps they have plans to introduce another DAW type app in the near future. Either way their rational is bullshit, plain and simple.

I read an interview with Ernst N-B last year in which he said straight up that the reason they decided not to add DAW-style audio multitrack recording is that they don't have the specialised expertise to do it, or to implement it in a way that will be distinctive in a crowded market. Their developers are all instrument/effect makers. He feels there are lots of great options for that on the market already.

Of course, since then they have taken on several new team members into their staff, and are clearly planning something big...

Personally I would love to see simple stereo recording introduced in a hardware modelled device in the rack. I think it would be useful simply to do that tbh.

However, the keyboard workstation metaphor they have been cultivating over the last 18 months does really work. I do not expect to use Reason as my host (I love Ableton Live for that, and/or Sonar). I use it as an instrument rack with built in sequencer, exactly like I use my hardware keyboard workstation, plain and simple.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a new sound generation unit for the next release as it's been a while since the Malstrom and NNXT. Some people have suggested an FM synth, it'd be interesting to see the Props' take on that.

And since they've slowly been replacing Reason's old effects with really good ones (Distortion -> Scream, Reverb -> RV7000, Compressor -> MClass Comp, P-EQ -> MClass EQ), it's not too big of a stretch to expect a new chorus/flanger/phaser or something like that.

Anyway I'm sure whatever they've got up their sleeves will be interesting.

Props should be concerned when a Reason thread on kvr dies
out after on 4+ pages: ominous

I'm sure whatever they have up their sleeve will take several more years than necessary to fall out.

Nah, I think they should be concerned when the naysayers stop making prophecies of doom.

Besides, this thread was started while all the hoopla yesterday was going on. Even a Reason flamewar pales in comparison to that.

When I was more of a fanboy, I would have totally disagreed with you on this point. In fact, I'm pretty sure I did sometime. But now I'm definitely with you that that explanation is bollocks.

Tracktion is perfectly stable with VSTs and audio recording. Sure there are bugs, but it has never crashed randomly. I only have problems with an occasional beta VST, in which case the plugin fails to load during plugin scan, and T goes on its merry way.

On the other hand, I'm just not bothered by the lack of audio recording or VST.

You're just trying to keep the thread going longer than 5 pages to prove that Reason isn't dead yet, aren't you?

Good luck. :hihi:

Actually, if it dies, then maybe they'll eventually release it for free like they did for Rebirth. SO I guess I better shut up!

I agree 100% with you John - nothing inherent in Reason would be damaged by adding vsti support. And your conspiracy theory is an interesting take I never considered. Its very, very possible something like a non-competition contract does exist.

But regardless of their motivation, it appears that the Props are doing extremely well with their current business plan. At this point, they don't *have* to add vsti support or really anything else to Reason. Its one of the most popular pieces of software in the world and shows no sign of slowing down.

I wonder whether this is true. Of course, I have no figures to back this up, but I have had this feeling that Reason was losing its market share for quite a while. This comes from nothing more than a hunch based of two things that I have noticed.

1. The slowness it took me to sell my copy of Reason 3.0. This was advertised all over the place and I had to reduce it to less than half price to shift it. It still took me nearly five months.

2. The number of daily new posts on the Reason Forum seems to have dropped. Its the same old names popping up with very few new people joining in. Perhaps its just summer but perhaps not...
