Well, yeah, but then I end up spending a bunch of money on a monitor I'm not using. Which is ridiculous.

I don't know, maybe an iMac would be good enough. Is it good for use as a media center type PC?

sorry im confused

my plan is to buy a basic Mac Pro and add my own screens.

maybe 2x acer 19" widescreens or similar.

how would you be spending money on a monitor you are not using ?

i agree that logic's automation is much better than cubase's (sx3). if there was a real automation enhancement in cubase i'd seriously consider to switch to pc/cubase. i use mac/logic and i'm happy with it but sometimes i miss features like midi plug-ins and some delicious (and often free) experimental plugs that are available only as vsts for pc.
then i obviously prefer a multi-platform host.
personally i'm not so interested in new plugs or features like 5.1 or control room. there are enough fantastic plugs out there and most of them are reasonably priced, sometimes even freeware or shareware.
another thing i like in logic more than in cubase (sx3) is the mixer because i don't need to see all outputs of each multi-output vsti i use and the "can hide" function is too unpractical. on the other hand it's beautiful to open a multi-output vsti and to see automatically all outputs. so i think that a better implementation of the "can hide" function could be very helpful. but perhaps in cubase 4 there is this possibility, at least it seems so.

an absolute joke compared to Logic
on the other hand Logic's sample editor is a joke compared to Cubase'
What's so relevant about logic?
ermm.. he said he thought they were ahead of anyone else.. I said no, Logic is better for automation

With Cubase, EG Amplitube 2 has more than 60 parameters, all fully automated with Ozonic, plus integration with Yamaha hardware and many more.

What else does logic Cubase didn't do on previous version? roll over and play dead?
It's damn easy to bad mouth: "Logic developers are self centered and their contribution to music software range from nothing to zero". It happens that i believe this but that's way OT i leave that to a fine thread about logic.
what the f**k are you going on about idiot?

my reply was very much on topic.. is there anything better than cubase for automation? "yes, Logic".. If in a Logic thread someone would ask if there's a better host for sample editing, I'd say "yes, Cubase"

now put on your fanboy hat again because you're abviously feeling a bit funny without it
I would appreciate you to leave the name droping to the people you are aquainted with, I'm not your father, neither your mother.

Also if your intention is to positively contribute to the clarification of any issues is to back your statemments up with facts, or else you could very well STFU.

pick a fight elsewhere moron.. you're stupid comments were completely irrelevant

I believe I heard some kids outside mention Logic
I'd go out and beat them up if I were you

Mac Pro costs $2500, minimum, which is just plain out of my budget. I don't need fully buffered RAM or a workstation processor, but if I want a non-gimped Mac without a monitor, that's my only choice.

@space..ahem...man.

Definitly, I don't think you are the average Logic user.Or even someone interesting.
I don't want to figth. I just want to know why Logic automation is better? is it covered in apple sauce? i don't like it them.

I'd like to not jump in the flamefest, but I'm also curious - what makes Logic's automation better for you, spaceman?

I vaguely (and perhaps incorrectly) remember Logic as having Bezier style curves. I'd love if this were implemented in Cubase...

Oh god no, I friggin' HATE Bezier curves!!! :-o :x

it's the ease in which you set up the automation to start with
click V to show the automation
just select the param you want to automate from the dropdown in the track
if you want to automate an other param just click the plus sign and a new lane will be created. Then draw, bezier, whatever your curves (there's plenty of editing options)

automation can be track or region based(hyperdraw), can be easily moved/copied wih a region. Curves are nicely placed over a copy of your midi or audio data for reference. You can set up automation for several tracks simultaniously ofcourse and every param of any plugin or mixer is available (and easily asigned to a hardware controller.. MIDI LEARN! does Cubase have that already?)

cc data is written as hyperdraw data but you can transfer that to track automation if you prefer to

you also have six automation modes (well, 5 + off ) read, touch, latch, write and midi (=actually hyper draw in regions)

That's pretty close to Cubase, but that does sound a couple notches more advanced, I will concede. :D

I'd give it all up for a good sample editor :D

There is no good sample editor?

I see no diference bettwen that and cubase automation, well the "off" mode is really a jewell, we got "w"and "r" buttons(touch fader, auto latch, X-Over,Overwrite and Trim).
MIDI learn on Cubase depens on the plugs, controller you are using. There is a bug on the
Generic Remote setup but i'm shure developers are quite aware of it.

MIDI data on cubase is also writen on automation tracks, if one choose so on preferences.

I believe there is no perfect sequencer, except logic... on your mind.

not compared to Cubase no.. it got stuck in the ice ages
it's very basic

I don't fancy spending money on something like wavelab and audacity doesn't work with my interface and is buggy on intel mac (for me it is anyway) so a good editor would mean a lot to me
