I really like the simplicity of the built-in sampler, but wouldn't be great if it had multiple velocity layers, e.g. drum kits?

The sample is a work in progress I beleive.
Generally, if there is anything you think is a little underdevloped on Tracktion, then a) it's already been brought up, and b) Jules has already said he'll get round to improving it just as soon as the more majot stuff is done.
Of course we aren't allowed to see the 'big list' so we just have to take his word for it...

I'm afraid to say that we nearly lost a few features from "The Big List" the other day, when Jules tore a few sheets off the bottom of the roll to mop up his spilt coffee...

I hope his floppy disk where he backups the Tracktion source code is dry.

I'm new to this computer music stuff (been playing piano and guitar for years). I've been reading Computer Music and the like, but still have some of those BASIC questions.
Today's basic question is.: Ok, so I'm playing with Free Alpha in Trackion on my Radium keyboard from midiman. I like raising and lowering the fillter cutoff and other knobs, but how do I do this from my keyboard with all of these knobs on it? (instead of the mouse).
Is this something that I need to setup in a)Tracktion b) Free Alpha c) the keyboard or d) all of the above.?
Thanks for the help,

I don't think freeAlpha supports midi control messages, so you can't do this, you'll have to move them by mouse.
But normally you would program the Radium with a controller map, ie. numeric codes corresponding to whatever knobs you want to control. The controls used (midi CC# 0-127) are different for each synth.
Some synths even support remapping their controllers, so you can use one setup in the Radium with several different synths. Most do not.
You can automate the movement of the knobs on the synth through Tracktion by dragging the little A on the right side of the edit, onto the FreeAlpha. You'll be given a choice of parameters to automate, I'm sure you'll figure it out.

free alpha does support midi control msg's. I'm not sure how to do this in tracktion, haven't tried it yet. but in cubase, all I have to do is click a knob on alpha, and then turn whatever knob I want to use on my phatboy.I don't think freeAlpha supports midi control messages, so you can't do this, you'll have to move them by mouse.

But if Tracktion can recognize them "by draging the 'a'" and showing me what can be automated, why can't I use the keyboard CC knobs to move them?
Something is not clicking for me, so to speak.
Sorry for being dense and thanks for the help!

Oh no, pardon me for being unclear.
Well, there's a difference. Your knob box sends midi CC messages. VSTs have to be programmed to recieve them and not all are.
On the other hand there's parameters in the VST interface context. They do not use midi CCs but a proprietory internal language. The plugin tells the host which parameters it can control, but this has much wider support. Almost every plugin has every parameter available for this purpose.
The A for automation manipulates the latter, the standard VST parameters.
They're just two different protocols.
I think Jules has plans for built-in controller remapping in Tracktion, but I'm not sure.

Don't know about Tracktion, but all LinPlug stuff has that ECS button (Easy Controller Setup?), OhmBoyz stuff & GMedia Oddity have Auto-Bind - same thing. On FreeAlpha just hit the ECS button, click on the parameter you want to automate, wiggle your hardware controller's knob and it should send a controller message. Switch off the ECS button and your hard knob should be tied to the soft knob (crikey, i just re-read that!). You may have to save this as some sort of MIDI set-up on the software synth. Make sure your sequencer isn't filtering out controller messages otherwise nothing will happen. Tracktion must have a button somewhere, look in the manual.

Yup, if the plugin supports auto binding of CCs to controls then it'll work fine with Tracktion.

Oh. Thanks for correcting me, Mr Arkadin. I've never read the manual and I never noticed the ECS system. I'll be try to be less assertive next time.
Now I feel like checking out the LinPlug synths again, come to think of it, this may have been one of the things that put me off buying Delta III!
