It takes up the *entire* screen space if you have more than two or three vsts open and even one multi out. I'd file a "preference" for this alongside coprophagia and self flagellation, but I guess you can fit it under that umbrella if you build it large enough.bduffy wrote: Do you mean the automation doesn't work or that it takes up a lot of screen space? A little bit different there. I find Cubase autmation perfectly useable, for example, so I think it's down to user preference - like Kritikon said.
What is missing from Cubase 4

The "*entire*" screen? Huhn - not my experience at all, mate; I don't understand how this works if you can resize tracks. And the automation works; you're talking about form, not function.kuniklo wrote:It takes up the *entire* screen space if you have more than two or three vsts open and even one multi out. But hey, I can tell this one of those things that just grates at you (feces and all), and this should be better with the new channel-thing anyway.

most of my VST folders in projects take shit loads of screen space. I load just one BFD and Halion instance and the game is over already, and there's like 24 track outputs already there! Yes indeed organising and automating multi-out VSTi's can be a chore.
tip of the day, and a tremendous time saver for anyone in my situation:
1. make a keyboard shortcut "show all automation".
2. make another one as a macro this time: hide all automation + close folders
this solution has worked for me quite the long time.

Respect the Macro! Tame the Automation!
That's a good idea; people often forget the power of macros. The only thing is, I tend to forget my key combos of Macros in that big list already stored in my brain...maybe I don't use them enough.

he said he likes to have that lane open ALL the time, i didnt see anything about overlaying automation.Kingston wrote:based on the two posts above you and the one you actually quoted, take a wild guess if it does both.
I know a couple of hosts that have both features...
but i actually prefer all the automation overlaying the one track, less screen space, and even with 10+ parameters being automated, i dont have a problem with it
but it would be neat to try the other way. Thankfully an up and coming host will have both -- which is why i was wondering about how cubase sx deals with it.... Im always open minded

...are counter-productive. If at all possible, I never do any of that shift/alt/ctrl mess.bduffy wrote:key combos
That means ditching all the incredibly dumb one-keypress defaults. The only problem is that anyone used to Cubase defaults will be very confused in my studio.
then again I thoroughly enjoy the "whoops/WTF" facial expressions that happen on occasions.

Right, so you tend to do a lot more things at once, I take ot. I know we discussed this before; I'll have to pick your brain on this sometime. I still tend to rely on a lot of conventional key commands.Kingston wrote:...are counter-productive. If at all possible, I never do any of that shift/alt/ctrl mess.bduffy wrote:key combos

Also: can't you use workspaces to switch from cluttered automation views to something more tidy?

yes, workspaces are the bomb.
actually the one most important fix of cubase 4 (to me) is that workspace/editor linking finally works, and does no longer cause something known as the abominable rec-arm bug. (all this is confirmed by steiny)
This is a habit I caught from logic screensets long time a go, and I've not seen a better implementation, or even alternatives to this. It's such a great time saver.

Yeah, I agree. I'm only starting to get cookin' with this, so I never encountered the "rec-arm" thing, which sounds nasty (and a bit typical).Kingston wrote:yes, workspaces are the bomb.

Love handles and a spoiler on the back.
Cubase SX4. It doesn't have love handles nor a spoiler on the back!
Bummer

I find the Radius time stretch quite unusable for hi end work. Maybe it works for the people doing DJ stuff (most of them are deaf anyway - no pun intendedK-Slash wrote:Hey, no I don't work for iZotope, but I tried Radius, and I must say that it's a very high quality tool. Awesome sound !
Radius creates echoes and flams/rolls with drum loops and makes dialog sound very distant and reverberant, which is the same problem the Apple built-in time stretch has in OSX. Believe me I have used every tool on the market, from Melodyne to Serato and still Timefactory (which uses MPEX) is my first choice every day because it creates the least distortion for moderate time stretching.
You can't do a 200% time stretch with it, but hey, how many projects did you ever have for which you needed that?
I guess it all depends on what material you're working with. For the work I do, MPEX rocks (nothing lo fi about it!).
And no, I don't work for them, but I think that what you've said deserves some kind of answer from a satisfied user because it's just not true...
