...Really, wtf is this all about? Can't see too much of interest in the rest of their improvements either. Basically, in one or the oher host you could already do most of the described things.
Now this is slowly pissing me off, too. I still use a ton of "VST2.2" and VST2.3 plugins - hell even the Waldorf Synths which are PRE VST2.2. Does that mean I bought this thing for nothing then?

Now I really want a demo first - but as usual... Steinberg is like "no demo - else it'll be hacked". No wonder that their shit is getting hacked anyway.

The more I read about C4, the more limits are shoing up, the less I actually like to switch. And with the lack of being able to test my plugins (cause giving back the host and getting a refund is a "nono" from Steinberg) it really turns me off to really use it. Unfortunately Logic moved to the Macintosh Platform and I don't like Sonar.

I don't think there should be problems with previous VST versions, except maybe with VST1, but then it's time to replace it with some 2.x freeware.

yep there is a thread on cubase net about synths that dont work in 4 - the answer so far is absynth 1 and the word builder for symphonic choirs - the first is so old that surely no-one has this anymore

the second is nothing to do with vst 3

so i wouldnt panic too much
I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

In fact, it might as well be that most of your older plugins *will* still run, but when reading the article, I just had the feeling that Steinberg wouldn't take any responsibilty for backwards compatibility anymore. And of course they must have a reason for it. I mean, *if* all older plugins were running properly, they surely wouldn't announce such things, right?
And btw, this is really pissing me off. Not being able to load older songs anymore in my book is a major drawback because it means you have to keep your old hard- and software until each and every of your old songs has been made convertible.
And fwiw, this has been one of my major complaints already when Emagic decided to sell themselves to Apple. Even *if* I own the AU equivalents of whatever previously used VST plugin, they won't load with the song automatically, so I will have to load all older songs and save a preset for each and every plugin first - which sometimes isn't even possible, in case the plugin has no internal preset functionality. Even the older Logic-internal VST presets won't load with their AU equivalents.
As you can see, it's not as if I'd only be bashing Cubase all the time. Believe me, the Emagic programmers had a tough time back when they did the switch, because I almost drove to Rellingen with some chainsaw (I've been testing for them back then).

Should be ok as it supports processReplacing. I guess that the one that won't work anymore are plugs that needed the old host behaviour to be checked in the plugin info panel in SX3.

Anyway, I hope that my preferred plugs/synths will make it to VST3 asap.
Btw, did someone reversed engineered it yet ? :hihi:

Sorry bout to ask but dropping backward compatibility isn't Apple\Emagic trademark? you don't seem to worry about that albeit you are now a user of their products, infact Emagic droped backward compatibility to an entire OS.
To a Cubase newcomer i don't think there is any backward compatibility isse since he\she is new to the program.
The ones who have upgraded neither, they still have their older versions to run older project on newer project they can run DX inside wrappers\chainer plug. Don't give me the lack of funtionalities excuse of wrappers, they migth be the same as DX on SX: no automation, no tempo sync...

This to me a big non issue... Perhaps the new mixer with the drag\drop fest is the one to blame... the current specs of DX don't allow toying with the new VST mixer... I think... It could be and most probably is Steinberg not willing to support other formay than their own. At least, if somebody now screams bug (Sonar user most likely :hihi: ) Steinberg will more easily pint point and troubleshoot any problem.

Wait wait wait... does that mean Cubase 4 only checks plugins "once" now like Wavelab? If so, then no sweat (at least for now).

Still it's a russian roulette whether or not the stuff works. Steinberg/Waldorf discontinued the PGG/Attack/D'Pole and I still like to use that stuff - without a wrapper or some shit please.

Really, the more is revealed, the less it makes fun. First all plugins will be sorted out "old VST" and "VST3" in Cubase (no custom loading lists anymore), then they cut DX and the old FXB format, the A1 but leave the crappy VB-1 and LM-7 in it since Cubase VST3.7, and now the "incompatibility < VST2.3 plugins".

One sentence towards Steinberg: "NICE WORK, GUYS!"

Best thing on it, they only give a damn to answer in the US board section, but not the german one. If you even get an answer in the US section, of course. But we're used to that, aren't we?

stag, did you actually READ that one of my major complaints in my previous post was EXACTLY about the f**ked up backwards compatibility in Logic? Apparently you didn't...

he just saw the word 'logic' and his chromosone-depleted brain cells went into melt down
My other host is Bruce Forsyth

I read, man.
But still you bougth it.
I find this discussions entertaining but from the point of view of getting whatever company to change their politics are a bit futile.
I don't like something, i simply don't buy... and forget about it.
There where a lot of guys forced to buy Macs because of Emagic, imagine if the majority just kept on PC and looked for another sequencer. They migth have eveluated the situation sligthly diferent.
The same with Steinberg, money talks really loud, albeit is to soon to talk about the outcome of C4. First let the beta testers :hihi: do their job.

Hey Spaceman, nice to see you.
Already managed to get out of the enviromment?

Sigh. You're all a bunch of morons.

Post

But what about VST 3 plugins in older hosts? Will future plugins be useless unless I update to Cubase 4 or another VST 3 host?
