OK tomorrow I'll try to record something more. There is also a more vintage sounding Strat type guitar and an EMG humbucker equiped one

ok, everything you want!
I'll probably end up making a versatile enough guitar to reach all those guitars tones, as the differences are big soundwise, but not so big technically speaking...

This sounds very nice indeed - look forward to seeing how this turns out...Mokafix wrote:...does such a thing exists?
not yet, but I think I'm quite close to it.
here are mp3s from my new guitar engine (completly rebuilt from scratch, for those who already heard heard 2005 demos on my site).
It's quite convincing to me, but I'm biased...
file0.mp3
a sample from my yamaha pacifica 112 guitar (to give you something to compare with)
file1.mp3
emulation of the pacifica 112
file2.mp3
strat like setting, with pick near the neck pickup.
file3.mp3
strat like setting, with pick near the bridge.
file4.mp3
LP like setting, with pick near the neck pickup.
file5.mp3
LP like setting, with pick near the bridge.
Of course, these are only single notes, but I think that's often where synths lack of realism.
If you want to be sure it's not sampled from a real guitar, you can look at waveforms : there's no noise at all, no matter how much you rise the volume.
of course, pick position can be changed (as you can hear on mp3's,), mics can be moved, and each string is independant.
EDIT
2 new demos :
demo1.mp3
demo2.mp3

sorry I disagree here, intermodulation and sympathetic resonance are harder to reproduce IMHOOf course, these are only single notes, but I think that's often where synths lack of realism

Yes, of course, but i was thinking of synths like revitar or slayer :
slayer works when you make chords with a lot of distrortion on it; but single notes are not good to me.
revitar is also more convincing on chords than on single notes - to me.
But of course, this is not the only thing.
One important thing is the way the tone modulate when you make a chord : it won't be the same twice, and makes the sound alive.
I managed to find the reason for that I think, although it can't really be heard on the sound demos, as there are no long chords, and is quite impossible to hear on single notes...
Is this what you call intermodulation?
the harder part - for me - is something I see but don't really get where it comes from. But I think it could have to do with the body or something. It makes almost the whole difference between a strat and a tele, I think. It could be due to the fact a tele has a metallic plate under the pickup...

yes I think it's that, BTW it's nice what I hear in GuitarDemo.mp3, even though a bit lofi, but you should record strums without external effectsOne important thing is the way the tone modulate when you make a chord : it won't be the same twice, and makes the sound alive.

there are two parts in that, one is passive and it's the filter, formant, effect of materials and pickups, the harder part - for me - is something I see but don't really get where it comes from. the other one is the feedback to the string vibration, where almost any part of the guitar is involved

Hey, great job on this! IMO this sounds better than Revitar and definitely way better than Slayer (which is just Karplus-Strong, btw).

Here are some bridge humbucker samples all played at the bridge. Not from variax. I may do some of those later.

Ok, I managed to make some steps, but the twang factor is still reluctent to unveil it's secrets.
If one could send me a wav with 3 or 4 short attacks of notes on the same string, let's say E1, A1, E2, A2 on the lowwer E string. it could (maybe) give me some answers...
thanks
oh, and also some Gibson attacks (as before : one of each open string, and each pickups alone if possible - don't want 2 pickups mixed) would also be welcome.
I know I ask much without any promise of reward, but let's say it's for science and posterity.

It's been a while since I did not post anything new here.
Here are 9 audio demos from a midi file played by the same guy, Paul Kucharski on a midi guitar. So the midi data was split into 6 channels, one per string.
(I remind you that my guitar synth is in fact 6 monophonic synths)
So if you think the playing is not on time, it's not me
The neck setting is played with pick closer to the neck (maybe a bit too much?), the bridge is a closer to the bridge, but not too close, and middle is in between.
The three guitars use Three different impulse sets.
guitar 1 : bridge, middle, neck
guitar 2 : bridge, middle, neck
guitar 3 : bridge, middle, neck
Hope it's not too bad...
I think I set the sympathetic res a bit too high. you can here it on the last long chord: the sound start to rise on bridge settings.
Also the body resonannce is a bit too metalic.
My fav one is guitar 3.
This is a tough test, as I think that kind of picking track is what's the most difficult for any guitar vst instrument, samplers included.
I'm quite sure that with a metal track with a more simple and "bourrin" playing, it would perfectly do the trick. ("bourrin" is a french term that really express that heavy rammsteinish guitar sound
)
There is no audio process, no midi editing (I just added some modulation to trigger fret noises, and add some length to the notes, to prevent the glides to produce extra attacks)
You can try to make it go through an amp sim with a clean jazz or country setting, and it should sound nice.
I plan to focus a bit on the bass guitar version to change a bit, and because I know it'll sound closer, as what I really miss is the "Twang", which is less important on a bass.
So If anyone can plug his or her bass and send me some short attacks of each string with both pickups, it could help a lot.
