Any NON-ProTools hit records?

I actually don't think it necessarily would be a biased list in the magazine. It's just true that most mainstream commercially produced albums are done in ProTools. Not EVERY one, but almost. But that doesn't say anything. That just says that engineers and producers are still sticking with what they have always used. Why change if it works perfectly for you, eh?
That's one of the problems with some of the negativity around here about PT. It doesn't need, nor try, to keep up with the latest features. And the engineers that use it do so because it just works. They don't go around looking for the latest additions like folder tracks and such. They are happy with what they have, and they should be. It works. Many people, if not most people, around here and other internet communities, are always looking for the latest and greatest. It's a competition thing to some of them, a prestige thing for others, and some people just like having the latest and greatest. And since PT doesn't do all the stuff the other hosts do, it gets a bad rap for being behind the times.
On the other hand, I know MANY, if not most, top engineers, have home studios that run Nuendo, Logic, and others. Some of them actually only keep an MBox around for those times when they need to do some editing at home. Probably never thought you'd see any engineers that make a few grand a song carrying around an MBox, did you? Well, that's all the ProTools some of them have. That just goes to show you that it's just a preference.
No need to prove anything. Anyone who doesn't know that the hardware is what makes the sound difference, and not the software, probably isn't going to be convinced anyways.
That being said, Ray Charles used Sonar. I know cause I saw the ad on the back of CM magazine a while back!lol

I disagree with that last bit. In my oppinion a lot of his music is a head above the saturation of disposable shit music the hip hop scene is filled with. Timbaland and him are basically the only things I like out of that scene right now.John Vulich wrote:Production techniques and lasting artistic quality are two different matters. Though I'm being sarcastic about the quality, I'm sure that his music is well produced... like so much other corporate plastic assembly line crap. However, I don't think people, other than die hard fans, will be listening to him 10-20 years from now.Lunch Money wrote:Well, I suspect he knows what he likes and therefore knows what he's talking about. I for one disagree and think Kanye's tracks sound great.
Plus this IS a discussion about production and top albums

ray charles' engineer terry howard used sonar to record 'genius loves company' and actually won a grammy for it.koolkeys wrote: That being said, Ray Charles used Sonar. I know cause I saw the ad on the back of CM magazine a while back!lol

I love Kanye and especially Timbaland (Nelly Furtado's "Loose" is literally the best album of any genre I have bought in the past 3 months) but I have to admit that I sort of agree with John here. My love for that music doesn't colour my perception that it probably won't make for lifelong classics or even decade+ longevity.
To the matter at hand: If somebody wants to pay me big cash to work in a studio, I will happily use PT.
Since I'm a home-based hobbyist, I don't care in the least which hit albums use it. Well, that's an exaggeration... I WOULD be curious, but it's an idle curiousity, not a curiousity based on any sort of need to prove a point.

these threads are so annoying. eaither you got it, your getting it, or you dont. expensive gear wont give you talent. just because a/b artist uses protools, people think that they can buy talent.
ive learned that some of my favorite bands got signed when i was 4.
it realy pisses me of when i see hip hop artist or any artist who should be in high school. talking about how there producers who use high end gear/instruments. producer? i dont think so. more like manufactured producer.
theres only two ways to be realy good. and that is born natural talent. or spending more time producing then you do sleeping. those that are truly good. eat, drink, and breathe music.
most of these people have gone to audio schools or classicly trained. of course there are musical prodigys like bt. but thats why hes called a prodigy. and thats a very rare breed.
most people who are truly good, work extremely hard at getting good. they dont pick up cubase/logic and some vsts and start making high quality music. they just pick up cubase/logic and vsts. i have heard plenty of music from these so called quick talent users. the only thing quick is how quickly i close theres tunes.
while im on this rant. its realy annoying when these quickies put there music on myspace or try/and often suceed at getting signed. the realy good people are prolific. i consider myelf one of these people.
people that make music for the love of it and dont care about a quick deal instead spending years creating one album thats produced to perfection. and selling that album when the time is right and there ready. it also pisses me of when a band sells an album with one good song and and 15 fillers that suck. hell sometimes i listen to an album, and the music is horrible but the album sells because its a collection of songs.
an example of an artist i respect is a band called seabound which are futurepop. these guys wrote an album 2-3 years ago and every song was awsome. after these 3 years they got another album coming out which im sure will be made with the same total pride and care. seabound even has unreleased stuff that they refuse to aknowledge because there new stuff is better.
the album called white nights is actauly pretty nice. they could easily sell it. but they dont because 'its not good enough' respect to them. im exactly the same way. when its time to release my album the first song is going to be just as good as the following. these musical attitudes seems lost in the new era of good enough, manufactured, and fastjobs

here are some of my favorite protools-produced albums:
- thriller
- the wall
- led zeppelin iv
- ac/dc, back in black
- the beatles, the white album
oh wait, those weren't done on protools cuz there was no protools.
if those weren't somewhere in the list of "100 top albums," i'd be suspicious of digidesign's criteria because those are all in the top 10 best-selling albums of all time.
spit in your friend's face for believing that bullshit. then spit in your own face for wondering whether or not you've ever heard a hit record not done on protools.

production 'quality' aside, Kanye West is a mediocre rapper who can only have a hit with a big f**k off sample of someone else's tune. Just my humble unedumucated opinion of course...sorry Chase, no offence but he's shite. The Chase wrote:you dont know what youre talking aboutJohn Vulich wrote:He sad "pro sounding" not "stupid crap sounding garbage".Jeebs Fat wrote:Kanye's new album is being done in REAPER.
