Urs, will you please develop a drum synth for OSX?!!! We desperatly need an alternative to ultrabeat. MicroTonic and RM IV are tepid and Drum Nine is nonexistant.
We need a serious percussion synth with crisp and tight kicks. The DR-008 is the best outside of ultrabeat but it is only for Windows.

i love micro tonic. i also love ultrabeat. i find microtonic better than ultrabeat on the whole except for lack of sample loading.
but can you really not make anything with these already great plugs? microtonic only reveals its inner magic to the persistent. it took me a while to really make it rock. there's a lot of power in there.
ultrabeat is a bit clunky. i hate the sample management, i wish it were more like battery drag n drop. but it's still a mean sounding piece of machinery.
try combining them, i works for me !!!

Urs, an important design consideration is the ability to swap or mix/match individual sounds between presets by drag and drop. The DR-008 can do this. Angus at FXPansion is one of the best developers out there (besides Urs:)
I agree with beatz that samples are a pain. I recommend a synth-only plug. I opted out of BFD because of samples. The market is crowded with sample interfaces. The real strength is in the synth.
beatz - IMO the distinction of the DR-008 sound was it's kick module. When you boost the resonance the envelopes produced a tight punchy decay with a round sustain very much like an origial minimoog. But more precise with a distictive digital wave. Most envelopes have a striaght ramp that flattens to the sustain. The DR's shape sounds analog with digital sharpness.

microtonic and ultrabeat are pretty cool as far drum synths go. naturally interested in what you could add to the soup, urs!
this is sidetracking a lot (sorry, probably should be on another forum but i'll still be evyl and mention it) but what i would really need now _myself_ is a proper drum sampler that's fast, easy to use and universal binary. i'm not meaning multilayer sample playback stuff like BFD (i have one plugin like that that i'm going to get too though), but something along the lines of dr008 without the synth extras, battery or manyetas ritmo... something that i could just load one shot samples to FAST, change their pitch and envelope and have some kind of simple filters to manipulate them - everything else would be extra.
the problem is, ultrabeat is really clumsy for that, battery 3 is reportedly yet buggy and certainly expensive and a bit overkill for me, dr008 is really good but windows only, manyetas ritmo is maybe a bit too stripped down already and it's not UB and i don't know if it'll ever be. if i had the patience i would probably code something really simple for myself but that would be a huge project for me. anyone got any ideas? audio unit, universal binary, preferably cheap and fast to work with. i know there's guru that does that and lotsa more but it's a bit over my budget and i'm not sure how fast it would be for just that one use.

In fact I'm thinking of an add-on plug for Zebra2 that takes up to 8 or so presets, renders them into a sample buffer and offers a nice & easy drum machine interface.alexibm wrote:URS can make Zebra as Multi-out VST and Drum synth is ready

It would be great if samples and sznth engine is supported - this is the great thing about Ultrabeat - of course samples like you find everywhere (DFH, BFD, etc.) are more or less boring. For acoustic drum I have SID and HALion is prefect - but for fast and flexible sample mapping - what is out there?
Battery and Guru are missing the synth engine, microtonic and attak the samples, etc.
Ultrabeat has both the sound quality is ok, but handling and reliability is not at the point it should.
but yes, I am looking forward to Urs approach with anticipation (and as he is also preparing a nifty sampling option for Zebra - according to another thread - if these three things float together it could be a real solution )

steff3, the sampling buffer would only be part of a Zebra-based drum sampler, call it ZebGroove for now... it might render a couple of velocities though, dunno...
The actual dedicated drum plugin would be something completely different, not even a working title yet, just a general concept... I even don't know if it's a gonna be a drum synth, a drum modelling device, a drum sampler or a mixture of these. I just know that the interface and the handling of patterns will be something I havn't seen yet. The actual audio part is pretty secondary at the moment...
