Very Subtle Cllicking and Crackling

Hello,

I just received my new receptor v 1.5 about two weeks ago. The first thing I did was add a full 2G of RAM (non-ECC, non-buffered as specified). So far, I've mainly used my Receptor with a midi KB controller (Yamaha CS1x) straight into the MIDI in, and headphones plugged into the front. I've experimented a bit with synth guitar and I eventually intend to use Receptor for live performance with my Ghost-equipped Strat and Axon AX100 MkII.

So far, I love this box, but...

Through the phones, I'm getting subtle crackling and popping on a variety of patches, at a variety of sampling rates and buffer sizes. Often, I get a crackle or pop with the first note played after changing patches. Sometimes a get a crackle or pop when changing patches, prior to playing anything at all. Oddly, SampleTank 2 XL seems never to crackle, but many of the supported VSTs do so quite often. For example, TickyClav seems to crackle a lot in the lower registers (no, it's not just the built-in "tickiness" ;)). Just now, the Synth Multis PAD Classic Filter was crackling very noticably.

I really hope there's a solution to this. The crackling is very subtle, and would probably not be noticable during performance or in a recorded mix, but it gives me the feeling something's wrong.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

JC

You beat me to the punch line!I rather suspect you have a problem box (mine is very quiet, and has so much output that when I played last night under the auspices of the best live sound mixer in the Monterey bay area, he was absolutely shocked at both the output power (I keep the volume knob at 12 o'clock, which is about 70%-75% I think, definitely nowhere near full output power,) and the bandwidth (using B4 II mainly, and Colussus Steinway B.) If there were even a subtle crackle Tony would catch it - he's really quite good at at) and I've never noticed any either in the studio with Mackie HR824s or my live rig with Bag Ends and a Stewart 1000W amp.

Suggest you out in a trouble ticket at Plugorama, unless Kermit or Hybernation know something that i don't - and there IS a 100% probablilty of THAT!! :D

Thanks for the reply. I've filled out a support ticket. It's good to know that the output will be consistently clear and loud when everything's working correctly :)

Just an FYI -- the problem was that I was listening critically to the supplied presets, which utilize free plugs, many of which click and pop by nature. Using commercial plugs, such as impOSCar and SampleTank, there's little or no clicking and crackling.

I had assumed that the supplied presets would serve as good benchmarks. Afterall, they were supplied with the unit. However, many of them produce so much clicking and crackling, no matter what the latency setting and installed RAM, that they are, in my opinion, simply unusable. Had I known this from the outset, many frustrating hours would have been saved. Now that I've uninstalled those free plugs that pop and crackle, which are unfortunately used extensively in the pre-installed synth singles and multis, I really enjoy, and always recommend Receptor :D

My guess is that it is a word clock issue.

I had the same problem until I ran a SPDIF cable to my MOTU Traveller and set to sync to SPDIF in the Receptor Setup. It may be a word clock issue. What are you running into and out of? What is your "sound card"?

Post

Thanks for the response. It probably wasn't a word clock issue, though, because I heard the clicking and crackling using Receptor stand-alone (listening through a headset plugged directly into Receptor, while not connected to any sound card or computer). Actually, the "use of certain free plugins" cause was suggested by Muse support. Based on my positive results since uninstalling a number of the trouble plugins, Muse seems to have provided the correct diagnosis in this case.

Perhaps you can list the ones that popped and crackled. I would like to see if they do so on my system and avoid them or remove them if they do! Thanks.

I'm not sure I should name the culprits , but when I get home from work, I'll be happy to post a list the free plugs I was able to keep. As a start, I recall that all of the MIK of Denmark plugs sound great.

I carefully auditioned all the free plugs over the course of a few days, so if a free plug isn't on the list, you can assume I had to remove it.
