SSL now underwriting Ardour DAW development for Linux

Hope this will help pushing developpers to port their vst to linux, so i can switch to ubuntu + ext2 :p

Wishful thinking perhaps:
I wonder how it would be if EnergyXT could run as a --special-- (?) plugin inside ardour - synced, but sequencing would only happen inside eXT.

(sort of like rewiring, but without rewire - I know it's hard to describe, but let's say "I have a vision")

Given amd's integration plans, this could, coupled with linux efficiency, provide for an interesting low-cost breed of daws.

I think it's great that someone is developing for an open OS. God, I wish BeOS could've survived; it would be a different world for audio guys if it hadn't been crushed under M$.

I figured it was pretty widely known news, especially since the prize in the recent Peter Gabriel remix contest was the SSL Duende. SSL almost went under before they were acquired. I think these new owners have done a pretty good job of rebuilding a brand by playing to its legacy in a fairly forward-thinking way. Often in these situations you see new owners completely exploit and squander legacy brand reputation into cheap knock-off nothingness .

Yeah, it totally brought it home about the SSL prize (and the conspicuous praise for the new SSL board in the Greatest Hits videos! )

I think they've done a great job; the SSL name has become much more prominent in the last year, and I think their forrays into software are really helping. It's obvious DAW-savvy owners have taken over.

Wow; there's something bizarre about Peter Gabriel's company releasing a software simulation of the 1980's compressor used on his former bandmate Phil Collins's famous drum fill. Really shows you what stage we're at!

Definitely lots of hi-end film/animation work is done on Linux workstations. Perhaps that's one of reasons for supporting Linux DAW developement (what's a flick w/o soundtrack).

Some of better audio hardware also have Linux suport already.

Ext2 will be able to run on it's own, why would you want to nest it inside ardour if you plan on doing everything in eXT anyway ?

First, i don't believe what managers say. They are liars by profession.
And if a company pays an independent developer, then they expect something.
1. The developer is no longer independent. After a few months, when he quit the other job, then they maybe will give him some 'suggestions', where he should concentrate at.
2. SSL is obviously interested to expand. The deal with Waves and the Duende DSP-gear are showing this.

In the IT world, there's a few open-source projects that have become funded by major corporations, and haven't necessarily resulted in the projects becoming closed-source or "corrupted". Example - Sun and Open Office.

So this could be a very Good Thing, actually!
