well "rave" was a particularly dreadful and moronic kind of dance music (usually played at raves) incorporating that horrible hoover sound, which was as ubiquitous as dogshit and fashionable in about 1989 - in the UK at least. It was also mistakenly referred to as "techno" (especially in the US) and to some people that's what they mean by the word...

well I think "raves" evolved from Acid House parties - they were just called raves from then on. It still makes me laugh when you hear kids talk about a rave they've been to... I was surprised to see on my local news that they're back again, deep in the countryside

music is music, who cares if its electric or not, the fact is that theres people that like it, who cares if you don't like it, you dont have to come on someones forum and say that (unless they asked for it), keep it to yourself, i hate when people do that , as if they know better and their opion will change what the world thinks.
for eg. theres country music some people like it and some don't, but it doesn't mean you can knock someone down for that, music is music no matter what the type it may be. Music is amazing and the effects of what it can do is amazing, it can make you mad happy, sad, make you think cry, dance etc.....thats one thing i love about making music

rave is so much better than techno, but rave sucks too. actually all this electronic garbage is on the way out.

Techno to me is all about drum programming and effects, and drum programming, and not just any old drum programming. It should be REALLY precise, and most importantly it should sound like the programmer went through HELL to get it sounding so damn sexy. You drum groove has to make dancers prick up their collective ears and basically feel GREAT at that moment in time.

You see, the detractors of techno who we shall call "the others" don't understand it, they just hear boom boom boom and if they are lucky, other worrying drums and sounds. Forget them, they won't ever be on the dancefloor when your track drops, so they are insignificant.

In my opinion get Battery by Native Instruments, it is an excellent sample player geared towards drums so you can set up kits very quickly (while your track is playing). Using other peoples loops can be useful in certain circumstances but that won't give you that 100% satisfaction feel you get from creating your own killer groove. In this light Battery is indispensable, V3 ships with 5GB of drum kits now (v 2 has 3GB and is plenty to be fair).

There probably are other drum based samplers on the market but I can't comment on them as Battery + Cubase 4 does everything I need drum wise.

As for effects go for the ones that give you a good return on live automation as without automation your tracks will sound lifeless and repetative (even for techno). For example the Betabugsaudio set of free effects have simple controls that do a lot when you move them. They are designed to be tweaked live so don't suprise you with any nasty artifacts.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about synths too much until the drums are sounding great as no synth in the world will save a techno track with a crap drum groove. Of course there are ifs and buts with that statement but as a general rule its worth following.

as far as "generators", I'd recommend downloading rebirth... I am not sure, but there was a free version up a while ago from them or something. It's the classic techno instruments like tb-303, tr-808, and tr-909 all in one. It will make "techno". If you want to do more however, read on vstis.

You don't need one to make techno, you can make techno with whatever you want, but there are some good techno styles available for the RM1X
