I am looking into this as well for the future.
Right now I have my eyes on the RNP from FMR Audio:

I've spent a decent amount of time with the RNP and after that, wished I had waited a few more months and opted for that unit over the Grace for the extra channel. It's really a phenomonal pre, and every bit as good as the Grace at half the price per channel. I compare the two because they both seem to aim for a transparant sound and are very vanilla sounding pre's. It's still on my future purchase list as well, primarilly for drum overheads.

OK I did a little test recording.
I tried to make it as scientific as possible.
I choose a Lo-Fi-ish backing track and I played it in mono so it doesn't get in the way of the test.
I used my old ART DPSII mic pre for some lines and THE BRICK for the others.
Rest of the chain is identical.
I panned one DI to the Left and the other to the Right (equally)

Have a good listen and tell me if you like the guitar on the Left or the guitar on the Right?

Andrew,

I really enjoyed your BRICKtest.mp3, very fluid expressive style.

I listen to CD samples on Amazon.com all the time. Your recording has better presence than most, even through the laptop speakers. With headphones on - the right did seem a hint richer. Still very clean recording and impressive performance all around. I wish you success.

I'm a keyboard composer/tenor, and am considering getting the "IK Effects Bundle" to go with my SampleTank 2 XL, Trilogy, Stylus RMX and ImpOscar. Cubase SX2 is my host and I haven't been inspired by any of its plugins.

Do you believe guitar Amplitube II, bass Ampex SVX or T-Racks would be useful for a keyboard player? I'm experimenting with muted guitar on SampleTank, but it has some effects.

Trying to get the best effects for my home studio. Especially plugins that are easy to use and have presets.

Great guitar playing and quality of recording.

We all know what "soon" means in IKM world...

Let's bring this thread to 400 posts! :D
LOL...

That is another question to Squids. Any ETA on the release? and please do give an answer in number of pages.
Might be sooner than you think! ;)

Why is it going to be dongle-less?

I may never buy another VST with a dongle. I have only one USB space open in my music room.

And I can't use Cubase SX2 on my laptop anymore because "my dongle is bent." I still have three keys for the early versions of Cubase VST.

IK and Steinberg will want to please me one day. They will understand. I'm a strong asset.

RonDP: IKMM is getting rid of their dongle, get on with the program man! :)

Now, Squids, you still did not answer the 'why' yet

If you are in a position of not being able to do so then please let us know and we will stop bugging you...or not ;)

Post

If they are going to get rid of the dongle because of low sales, or customer dissatisfaction it only says two things, that everyone that complained loudly about it in the first place was right, and that IK are willing to ignore what customers say and find out the hard way.

I could be wrong of course. Maybe the dongle making machine broke. maybe someone important said they don't like it, like a famous person :o . Anyway, I'm getting a bit cynical so I'll just shut up and wait for the real reason.

Does anybody think it may have to do with the impending release of Revalver MkII :D

Good on IK (no doubt Mr. Squids also was vocal on the point - top fella) for getting rid of the dongle, for whatever reason.

You know what I am concerned about...What if the software cp replacement is even worst for the system stability then the hardware counterpart?

Do we know what protection method they plan to use?

Post

At least, EVERYBODY, will finally have a chance to demo the software without having to buy first a dongle that they might throw away if dissatisfied with the demo.

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

Hey Squids, is the coming update only for removing the dongle protection, or does it add extra features?

How much can you share with us?

Since it is available as a free update for all AmpliTube 2 owners NOW I can share anything you like! ;)

First of all, yes it is dongless. If you want to know why, you don't have to guess. I will tell you. The dongle was originally there to protect the software of course. It's actually done a fine job on that. But, there are some sacrifices with having a dongle such as no on line demo version (by the way there IS now an on line demo version on www.amplitube.com so go download it and see why this product is loved as much as it is) and also... do any of us, myself included, actually like dongles???? Ummmm not really. Kind of a PITA. So, IK has listened to those that didn't want it and has made it so!

Just so you know, AmpliTube 2 is a very successful product so it has nothing to do with that. Some of those theories I see are wrong. However, with there being so many millions of guitarists out there to potentially get it at some point in time I think the less things getting in the way the better. If someone can just go download it and check it out that is really ideal for both the user and the company... at least when that's possible (for an effect yes, for a large sample-based instrument not as much... but there's always the limited set versions too that IK does which is nice!).

With AmpliTube 2.1 you also get standalone operation and it comes with the SpeedTrainer software built-in that AmpliTube 2 Live has from the StealthPlug bundle. This allows you to load in a song file (mp3, wave, aiff etc.) or loop and speed it up or slow it down without changing the pitch. Want to learn how to play Eddie Van Halen, Frank Zappa, Satriani, Metheny etc. note for note? Slowwwwwwww it dowwwwwwwwwwwwwn. ;) I love that SpeedTrainer. It's fun just to load loops in and jam along with them. Sonic Reality did about 500 megs of "Jam Loops" for the StealthPlug to use in Speed Trainer. In fact, I think we might offer that for sale to AmpliTube 2 users if they just want those loops. They are "full band" loops or guitar and drums minus bass or drums and bass minus guitar... just stuff you can play over that repeats... it's good for practicing and actually could even be good for songwriting ideas as well. I think we'll sell it for $50 on www.esoundz.com It's pretty cool! I'll give a way some for free just to get an idea.

Anyway... it's here. Go get it. Your dongless AmpliTube 2! Now you can see for yourself if it's for you or not. I can honestly say that I don't know why anyone would not want to have it in their set up to pull out for any number of Swiss Army knife functions it can do (not just on guitar but on any sound no matter what style of music... you do electronic? This is a distortion station. Classic Rock keys? You have so many lush pedals in there it is worth it for those alone... CE-1, MXR Phase 100, Fuzzface, Dynacomp??? Dynacomp on a Clav D6 is where it's at!).

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I use it all the time now. No going back! I've been getting into the dual rig algos lately.
