Actually there is panning for the individual OSCs; under each OSC's DCA you can select pan as a modulator. So he may indeed be referring to an SQ8L patch ;)
Sorry to have to correct you again, but the modulators are always sources, not destinations. In this case, the source refers to midi cc panning (cc #10). Also since the DCAs 1-3 are mixed before the filter and the filter is mono, there can be no panning for the individual OSCs... ;)
Fair enough, I'm still confused though. How he could have a patch with two voices panned as he stated? This made me believe that the SQ8L could do this with the addition of PAN as a modulator, but your explanation makes sense. I haven't explored any of the new modulation features added to the emulation yet - too much time cleaning up banks :hihi:

Maybe he meant he has two patches panned as he described ?

1-2-Many: My guesss is that those patches may have been part of layers at one time, but now with re-arranged banks and the VSTi missing the layer feature they sound panned to either side. Also possible is that some producer needed 2 mono sounds on different mixer channels and changed those patches accordingly and that made it somehow into the public banks.

Hello The patch in question is called "HMBSYN". Patch 000 Bank esq_004.8XL. I had tweaked it a little but the it didn't sit in the mix very well with the radical panning. After adjusting the pan it now has a nice stereo movement(or more in tempo with the song.

After closer examination it does not appear to be two distinct voices as I original stated, but possibly separate envelopes applied to each side. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused.

Just updated the SQ8L banks- now up to 119 banks!

Awaiting a few more important banks - and then I think I'm done :hihi:

I merely updated the file on my site, so any link in this thread should get the entire archive with the new additions. Anyone who picked this up already can/should download it again.

Enjoy!

Where are these banks from again? Are there dupes inside?

Post

I know it's a longshot, but I would LOVE a Mac version of this. The SQ-80 was my second synth ever and has always had a place in my heart. Would be nice to be able to bring it on my laptop on a plane. :)

Nice to see the factory presets (as I remember them from the ESQ-1 version 2.30) in these new banks!

edit: misread the question

All collected from the web, most are currently available on Rainer's site, http://www.buchty.net/ensoniq/ and from links on www.synthzone.com/ensoniq.htm I also included a few banks of Tomg's from his work he did earlier in the thread; these I've yet to identify the source on.

View the README; short answer is as few as possible. I spent hours going through all the available banks on the web that I'd downloaded over the years, and running them through Soundlib and my own documentation to spot the duplicates. There may be a few duplicate patches between banks, but each bank is unique, most are totally so.

@Mistertoast:Not to toot my own horn, but this is the most comprehensive clean collection you'll find anywhere.

Actually, not such a longshot, least not as long as something done in SE. I know that Seig did the programming using Pascal (last I heard from Rainer). It should be somewhat easy to port it and compile to a mac version - course I'm no programming whiz.

It's done in Delphi (which used to be called Pascal).

But if ONLY being in a particular language was actually all you needed to port to a Mac!!! If that was the case, my Poly-Ana and SCAMP would be available for the Mac right now. So what's stopping me then? That I can't afford to eat or pay my rent, much less go buying TWO new Mac systems -- these days you need a PPC and an Intel so I can test both varieties! So, that's MY situation and I'm SELLING software. From Sigi's point of view, giving software away for FREE, how many thousands of dollars (not to mention months of time) do you think he should invest so you Mac people can play too?

Software developers NEED your support people. To you it might be free, but to Sigi it was expensive (computers, time, food, and rent) and well over a year of work (I think I read somewhere that he started this project 2 years ago, though I could be mistaken).

Yeah, I can certainly understand the hesitence given the cost involved, I just thought maybe someone with the Mac programming skillz might be able to assist or something. At any rate, I would actually buy such a port if it ever came out. After being treated like a piece of garbage by Native Instruments, my dollars are going to small, independent developers for the most part these days. :)

I too will glady pay/dontate, not for a mac port, for this VST as is now. Seig, you need to set up an account. I think many people here would donate as a thank you and to help you on your way - This one gets my vote for the best new plug-in of 2006!

Thanks Again

Well, no. Just saying it may be possible that he has within his possession, or immediate surroundings (friends, university, etc.) the means to port this over to Mac platform. In no way am I saying he should make $ investments to produce a FREE VST for Mac.

I Agree. As the time frame goes... to my knowledge he was one of Rainer's students taking a course in computer architecture. This was done as his semester project for that course. Requirements made it so his work had to be openly published, hence the FREE version. This info was given to me back in Oct 2005, when I assume he was still taking the course, or trying to finish up his project. Anyway, he at least spent an entire year on the thing.

Wow, just stumbled over this thread today.
Amazing synth, very light on the old CPU too.

But personally, I must say that I don't like the GUI at all. It's a waste of space and a waste of computerized onscreen editing options as well. Of course, it's just like the original hardware, but IMO there's no need at all to emulate hardware interfaces, especially as there's no real knobs to touch simultaneously with a mouse.

Obviously, SQ80 users will find their way around it quickly, but I already know that I will never ever create a single patch from the start.
IMO there should be an alternative GUI for the full version, making it easier for non-SQ80-users to work with it. More parameters on a single page, probably even indicating the signal flow.

However, it's a really great plugin, apparently capturing the sound of the original fairly well. Which is quite amazing, as the keyboarder of my first more or less "professional" band has been an Ensoniq addict, and I already fooled around with some patches certainly reminding me of those good (ahem...) old days.

Also, thanks to tomg there's a whole shitload of patches to use straight away. So that's what I'll do, plus some slight modifying. And of course, then some sampling work will be required - I'm on OSX as my main music platform now... fortunately there's Chainer and DiscoDSP highlife, both making VSTi sampling fairly easier.

So, many thanks for this!
